PS3 is beasting and has been for the past several years. Does it have what it takes to overtake the legend (PS1) and possibly Wii (if it overtakes PS1)? Consider that PS3 might even be at 77m shipped according to this thread!
Will PS3 take second place eventually?

Looks to me like its 5th now. Itll take 2nd....this gen, eventually.
How long is this "counting chickens before they hatch" phase gonna last? Its still gonna be several months before PS3 is within striking distance of overtaking 360, but nono you guys are allready setting your sights higher.
Until it happens, PS3 is last place, so please act accordingly until the milestone actually happens.

Wikipedia had PS3 numbers surpassing the 360 as of September 2012, and now you have IDC releasing their stats. I don't even know who to listen to anymore, just seems like individuals throwing estimates around.

I don't think it can cross 98M and that's a very optimistic projection. No.

Hmmm
PS3 did close to 12 million 2012 - Down around 2,3 million
Less than 10 million this year = 82 million
Less than 5 million 2014 = 87 million
Phased out in 2015/16 add another 5 million = 92 million
I would say it will stop around 90-95 million and not top Wii.
Predictions for 2009:
360: 39-42 PS3: 31-34 Wii: 67-70
Future projection
Wii will hit 100 million before christmas 2010 (made december 2008)
NDS Family will have sold and shipped more then PS2 at the end of 2009 (made january 2009)
