Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Why would I ever want to purchase a neXtBox 720?

This thread is a pretty close minded way of looking at things

Why would ANYONE buy ANY console when you could always build a better PC. The answer is simple, many people especially those that arent "hardcore gamers" like the ease of use a console offers. If you go to the store to buy a 360 or PS3 game you know you can go straight home, stick it in your console and it will run perfectly fine. You also know there is zero need to worry about upgrading parts and compatibility issues until the next console releases.

For many core gamers like us PC gaming isnt that difficukt to figure out but we are the minority. The vast majority of gamers who play on console dont know anything about how to build a rig, how Steam works, or how to even gauge system requirements

You are 100% wrong as the others do offer distinct value to be purchased along with a PC.

Nintendo has its first party games that demand a Nintendo hardware to be purchased. A lot more than one or two titles as well.

Sony, while more similar to MS, still has quite a few exclusives (more than one/Halo) along with its PSNPlus service that push distinct value to their hardware.

MS on the other had has none of that.

Halo 3, Halo 4, Halo Reach, Halo ODST, Halo Wars, Lost Odyssey, Fable 2, Forza 2, forza 3, forza 4, , forza horizon, all kinect games, gears 2, gears 3, blue dragon, red dead redemption, kameo, perfect dark, banjo, XBLA, viva pinata, mortal kombat, WWE, NBA, NFL, NHL, FIFA, pretty much any sports game, and this list goes on and on.  These are reasons people decide to own both consoles and PC.

PC crowd and console crowd is very different so this thread makes no sense. Not to mention their is many games that 360 has that PC doesn't and vice versa. Good job doing as little research possible though and basing thing purely off your opinions.

And honestly do you think MSFT cares that you will pay for Windows 8 instead of the NeXbox?  Not competitors because they are the same company.

The crowds are only different due to where a PC normally live and what it looks like.

NextGen is going to push the differences between them to be nil. Win8 will further that idea that they are nearly identical in nature and capability.

You can also buy small, nice pre-built boxes if you wish as well for a little more money that building. But, I was specific in that I was asking the VGC community. A community of gamers who are also genuinly more tech oriented and therefore are not afraid of a little video card and memory manipulation.

Also, as for games... beyond Halo, what other big games (games that a great majority of Xboxers play) are not available on Steam/PC/OnLive/Live(win8)?

My point also had nothing to do with MS preference on what I own. Obviously they'd be just as happy either way, so long as I was using Win8.

Well that's Microsoft's entire goal right? Make the console so similar to a PC that you might as well buy into the Win8 PC/phone/tablet thing and not get one. It's not like they make amazing money from the Xbox division.

Not excatly, Microsoft get a percentage of money for every xbox 360 game sold. For PC they just get the intitial price of windows and thats it, unless you use windows 8 market or buy a microsoft tablet. Microsoft dont want people to game on pc's (unless there using windows 8 marketplace) because they dont make any money from the sale of games on pc.

Go and look at last quarter's financials. Windows >> Entertainment and Devices.

MS would rather you gamed on a PC for free than a Sony or Apple or Samsung device, because those companies threaten its complete hold on their core business.

I never said microsoft would prefer you to buy a sony/apple/samsung device. I said that they would prefer you to game on THERE console instead of pc.

I haven't owned a PC for about five years now. My laptop has sufficed for all my PC functionality just fine - except games. My laptop is getting on in age and I'm looking to replace it with a touch laptop/tablet unit - almost certainly with Windows 8 (unless someone else develops a op that will run on both).

What I most certainly won't be doing is spending $900-1000 on a PC which only purpose would be to play games (because I still need a laptop) when I could get the latest console for half of that or less. So there's your answer.

Although between my Wii, 360 and tablet, I doubt I'll bother to upgrade to any next gen system. I've tons to play.

Yeah I have no need for a laptop as I have a smartphone. It more than meets all my computing needs away from home.

not sure why you should but other people don't want to buy a new gpu after a while and stuff like that.

but how do you already know the games library of the nextbox? or if you won't get something like ps+? you talk about stuff of this gen to know what next gen will offer...

maybe kinect 2 will be something you and your family would really enjoy (i believe you have one), i have no idea but we should talk about it when we know about it.

You won't need to buy a GPU more often than buying the next generation console.

I already made a small list for you above.  Im a PC gamer btw and I can say thier is reason to own each and every console. People have different preferences and for you to tell people that Halo, Gears, Forza, Sports games, etc are not worth the purchase then that is nothing more than your opinion but do not try convincing people who obviously believe differently

EDIT: In case you don't feel like looking at my previous comment. Halo 3, Halo 4, Halo Reach, Halo ODST, Halo Wars, Lost Odyssey, Fable 2, Forza 2, forza 3, forza 4, , forza horizon, all kinect games, gears 2, gears 3, blue dragon, red dead redemption, kameo, perfect dark, banjo, XBLA, viva pinata, mortal kombat, WWE, NBA, NFL, NHL, FIFA, pretty much any sports game, and this list goes on and on.  These are one of few reasons people decide to own both consoles and PC.

Financials say otherwise. I don't think they care, as long as it's not a competitor.

Isn't their games such as Fable, Gears of War, Halo, Forza, Various rpg's like Lost Odyssey, and Crackdown to name a few. If you don't like those games then PC is for you I guess also Only Gears of War 1 i believe was ported to PC.

Im not 100 percent wrong on anything as the 360 has sold over 70 million units whike being in the exact same situation you describe the 720 will be in.

This is a sales site, use the numbers.  You forget that you are an incredible minority in the world of gaming who actually goes out and looks at different things consoles / PC market offers.  You would be completly shocked to know the vast majority of the gaming world doesnt even know or understand what titles are 1st party or even exclusive

Always remember internet forums arent reflective of real life

bolded... not true. Current PCs with XP/Vita/7 were never fully like a 360. 360 always had Live where as PCs only very recently started to get that. Additionally, the entire entertainment/computing market has shifted greatly due to smartphones/tablets/etc.

I'm also talking about me and those of us on this site. We are not the mass market. We are the core gaming/tech people.

My smartphone meets all my gaming needs away from home, but I still need Word and a real keyboard to travel with me.
