The Vita being on the market for a little over a year in Japan and Soon to be NoA and Europe (1 year) sold 4.08mil!
As for the Wii U just being 6weeks in NoA, 1 month in Europe and 3weeks in Japan has manage about 2.48mil hardware sold!
Can and will Wii U surpass the Vita in Sales this year?

I think both consoles will plummet to nearly irrelevent sales within a few months. Though if nintendo releases a big game or two in time for the 2013 holidays, they could pass the vita by the end of the year.

Of course it can.
It'll most likely pass the Vita up Q1-Q2. Depending on game releases of course.

Mark my words, Q1 of 2013.
If Nintendo does the marketing efforts right with Wii Fit U and a massive marketing campaign with Lego for Lego City Undercover with toys and all, it will. I think that is why Nintendo didn't do much marketing as the Nintendo faithfuls were going to be buy the first batch.

Given the information we have at the moment, I could see the Wii U passing Vita in WW sales in Q3 or Q4 of this year. A lot can happen before then though. Price cuts, game announcements, the reveal of MS and Sony's next consoles, etc.

If Nintendo does things right, it should get done in Q2. If not, it may take until the fall/holidays.

I think it will pass the Vita in Japan and North America in Q1, it will take it awhile to pass it in Europe, and worldwide it will pass the PS-Vita in April or May.
