'The Avengers'

The year that was brought a number of hype-filled hits. Some of that hoopla was deserved. Plenty of it wasn’t.

So which movies received the most undue recognition? According to an informal survey around the L.A. Times newsroom, there are several viable candidates for the dubious honor of most overrated movie. Did  “The Avengers” and its superhero pyrotechnics draw the most unearned praise? “Prometheus" and its cult following? Questing of a more animated sort with "Brave?"

The laughers are represented too.  Did 'Ted’s” raunchy slacker comedy merit all its air kisses? "Project X's” low-budget approach to the lowbrow? And the art house isn’t immune to the overrated tag, with the studiously chilly “The Master” garnering its share of hype--and naysayers.

Best of 2012: Movies | TV | Pop music | Jazz | Video Games | Art | Theater | Dance | Classical music

Finally, there's the epic ambition of “Cloud Atlas." The film finished high in our most underappreciated poll--does it have an equal or even greater number of haters?

We’ll put the question to you. Vote in our poll for which movie drew the most undeserved love this year. (Last year, incidentally, the winner was "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1", while"Inception" earned the title in 2010.) We'll tally the votes and hand out the ignoble crown before 2012 is out.

What's the most overrated movie of 2012? (Poll Closed)
"The Avengers" 85.39%
"Prometheus" 4.62%
"Brave" 1.02%
"Ted" 3.03%
"Project X" 1.78%
"The Master" 1.78%
"Cloud Atlas" 2.38%

Poll is broken when I paste it but you can see the percentages at least. It also only has a limited number of movies that you could vote for.

What is the most overrated movie of 2012 in your opinion?

The Avengers was a good popcorn movie that didn't try to be much more than that ... People who wanted more were probably disappointed, while those who wanted that were probably very pleased.

Prometheus was just garbage ...

A poll in which DC fans can vote in? What could possibly go wrong.

Avengers was done right. It was a popcorn movie. Because all the stories where setup in other films. Why do people forget this? The movie would of been a confusing mess. If all the characters where introduced in the film. Which is what Justice League is gonna have a problem with.

I think The Avengers is a touch overrated by fans, but critics were pretty much on target.

I hate to say it, but Lincoln might be the most overrated movie of 2012. I never thought I would say that in a million years, but I think it was a missed opportunity. Not bad by any means, but not the spectacle it could have been.

Avengers is a 69 on Metacritic. Id say its rated just fine.

Or is being overrated referring to something just being more popular then it should be?

___________

Pretend Exclusive: A 3rd party multiplat, that releases for multiple consoles in the same window, in which all press showings and marketing are catered to only one console. Exclusive console bundles, being the lead platform, as well as timed exclusive/exclusive  betas and game content also strengthen the claim. The final effect is that the uninformed gamer will be convinced that the version primarily advertised is the only and/or best place to experience the game.

X1: Titanfall, COD: AW.    PS4: Watch Dogs, Destiny

Xbox E3 Exclusives: Halo MCC, Crackdown 3, Phantom Dust, Scalebound, Dance Central Spotlight

Completely over-hyped.

I wouldn't say Prometheus was overrated though. It didn't get very good reviews

Ted and Project X were both overrated. Think I'll go for Project X being more so though. While Ted may not have been funny it had good moments and wasn't a steaming pile of crap.
