I cringe everytime I hear the word 'casuals' because it seems like a degroratory term gamers use to talk about 'normal' people.

Don't be mad at them, it's a defensive mechanism so those "h4rdc0r3 g4m3rz" can feel superior at something, however meaningless it might be.

Dont you call me normal! CAUSE I'M NOT! *cries in corner*... I'm.. hardcore.. HARDCORE I TELL YOU!!!.. :'(

I agree that  Pac Man took skill, but then again arcade games were seperated by skill. The fighters were for the moderate and higher level players most of the time growing up. Most of the other games were just for fun, but yes they can all be mastered.

You should see my family in awe when they watch me play Halo, God of War or COD. They are in awe of the graphics and way videogames are today, but put a controller in their hand and watch them squirm. No doubt if they had the patience they could learn just like we did, but the Wii would be a better fit for them as it sorts through the fundamentals. Thats where Nintendo went wrong, they got the casuals with the instant gratification and then left them there without a follow up. Casuals will not chase something that isnt staring them in the face, so Nintendo better smarten up.

Bold is the important bit. After Wii Music (which was a horrible failure and an embarrasment to Miyamoto's track record) Nintendo just made sequels to their popular Wii games without exploring that direction further. And when they didn't keep delivering on their promise, hype gradually decreased as people lost interest. Had it not been for New Super Mario Bros, the Wii would have declined even earlier, and faster.

I figured three years would be the extent of the Wii's enjoyment. It beat me out by a year, but their sales dropped drastically after that.

I can see it clearly, your superior gaming skillz, they call you a god in your tribe.

Don't go there, but you know very well that games today to the average onlooker demands a much higher level of hand-eye coordination than decades before the turn of the century. If I was a casual I would be intimidated as well. I was playing UFC with my friend and his uncle came in and saw us playing the game and started cheering us on. He asked to play and when he asked what the controls were it was like handing him a laundry list that he didnt have the time or patience to sort out. Remember the days when you could play a game and just punch and duck like the old boxing games on Sega? Yeah, those days are over.

UFC is separated by three types of gamers (from online experience):

1. The spammer: Generally a casual without the patience to learn how the games core mechanics work. They just want to punch and kick their way to victory.

2. The moderate player: This player knows how to reverse sometimes, but knows the essentials moves and have to time them.

3. The hardcore gamer (technician): Not only knows how timing works, but how to create advances on their opponent, reverse at the right time and force them into submission or take them out whether on the ground or standing. They not only know the essentials, but the extra parts, like knocking your breathing off course with calculated punches and picks to the stomach and wearing out their opponents stamina. They understand that if they cannot win one way they always have  other options. The other two might get stumped because of it.

I may not measure up to your extreme skillz, but I just checked my hand-forehead coordination and it worked really well. As a casual noob, my attention span isn't made for reading technical gibberish about the classification of gamers.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

Exactly. Nintendo better pander to the casuals because they aren't going to win any hardcore battle with Microsoft and Sony. They played it smart and came out on top with their last console. I suggest they follow suit and commercialize the hell out of it.

So I don't know why you consider Wii Fit U, the sequel to two 20mil+ sellers, 'meh'-worthy.

Dragon Quest is a huge franchise in Japan, with 20 million-sellers in that region alone. Pikmin is an easy million-seller, as is Lego. Monster Hunter Tri for Wii sold almost a million just between NA and Europe, and 3 Ultimate is the first HD Monster Hunter game localized for those regions. Rayman is a well-known series and there's a lot of hype for Legends. The Wii U's first-half lineup for 2013 is nothing to sneeze at.

The only battle Sony and Microsoft will be having in 2013 is the battle for second place... again.

I dont consider those games quality, I consider them smart gimmicks. Remember this is a videogame site and this is about sales. Nintendo hasnt been selling big over legit titles, which is why they were never taken seriously by third parties. The casuals buy it, play it and put it in the closet plain and simple. The main people still using their Wii's today are the Nintendo core which are the same loyalists who bought the Wii U in the first place. Without a Wii mote being in the forefront they wont have the demand to beat Sony and Microsoft. I think sales have proven the point that Nintendo cant beat them without luring casuals. How in the world could a console sell double what the competition did at one point and still have less use?

The way things are going....I feel a change in the winds this coming new gen.

So you say 10M Mario Galaxy sales, 11M Smash Bros, 7M Galaxy2, 6.7M Zelda, 6M DKCR are all unlegit sales? Are all of those are smart gimmicks?

You say the typical Nintendo game is the one worth playing once and then it will be put away. Fun and interesting fact is when you go to the used games aisle you can find lots and lots of games like Killzone, Bioshock, Red Dead Redemption, Arkahm City, Mass Effect, Fallout etc. (those are good games don't get me wrong), still it's much less usual to find a game like Mario Kart Wii, despite the fact it has sold 33M uints.

Now why does people does whant to get rid of the former games, and not of the latter? The fact is, it's true a lot of MKWii player are "casuals" but still they keep playing the game for years, hence it holds more value than the avarage 90+ metacritic hardcore game. If you play a game for such a long time it can't be a gimmick. Then you say the only ones who are playing their Wiis today are Nintendo loyal fans and still Just Dance 3 has been in top10 all the holyday season, don't you see some fallacy in your argument?

You're on a gaming forum, I doubt I am referring to you. Love the attempt at sarcasm though. Its not elitism either, I am just stating there is a difference.

Yep, the essence of his ramblings is that this is VGC and all that matters are sales. But Nintendo sales don't matter because they are not "legit sales".

And I am a gamer, I beat Demons Souls.

Nice spin, guys. Its still far too early (this week still includes Christmas Eve), we can judge in 4 months time.

We'll need at least 6 months to make a judgement about how is it doing. But the real judgement only can be made some months after then release of its competitors.

I expected it to last way over five years, and continue it's momentum and market share growth. Because I assumed Nintendo would continue with the course they set for the system.

And if the right games would have continues to be released for it over its life cycle, I bet I would have been correct. Imagine if Sakamoto made something similar to Tomodachi Collection for the Wii instead of....... Other M..... and so on.

I LOVE ICELAND!

So, what we learned today.
Hardcore = Smart, godlike.
Casual = "normal" people in a derogatory way.

Can we stop with this crap?

About Wii U sales, is too early to say, what we have now: mediocre sales.

Ps.: Wii U was not launch yet in some markets, like Brazil.
