With software, yeah. Hardware alone....they might still have sold enough outside of the time they were loosing money to make up for it. To recoup R&D and total costs of creating the system, only Nintendo knows that.
Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Most likely no news. To compare, Vita wasn't suppose to make a total profit for 3 years and that was with Sony's original sales projections. It takes a long time to make money off of a product, and no one knows how much it cost Nintendo to create the 3DS or the itemized profits they get from it.
Honestly, it doesn't matter. The system is selling and will be profitable unless they stop making it for some reason or give them out for free.
Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(
