Forums - Sony Discussion - Can someone explain why people thought that Playstation All-Stars would sell millions of copies?

oh hang on, just asked my daughter, she rembers it too. so now its 3v2.  hmmm?

Oh noes, WHATEVER WILL WE DO!?

In all seriousness though, enough, Kowen.  Over the holidays, I watched a lot of TV on ITV1/C4/C5, ITV2/E4/5*, Sky Sports News/Challenge/Dave.  These channels were absolutely littered with adverts for Vita, Wonderbook & "family fun" (as in, at least 1 for each per ad-break) and I did not see PSABR advert a single time.  Not even once.

If you watched different channels to these with your daughter, and it was shown "a lot", then whatever, I believe you.  I find it strange that Sony would target the demographic who watch the same channels as me with all their adverts except one, but there you go.

I can report for Germany. Sony spammed advertising for this game on almost every TV channel, twice per break, if not more. Impossible not to know about this game here, still nobody seems to care (20k sales last I checked)

I said 1 million LTD at best and I still hold on to it.

Well you'd be correct.  Because LTD = Lifetime to Date.

As in... how much is has sold since today.

Right, there was a "D" too much in my post ;)

Game of the year 2017 so far:

5. Resident Evil VII
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
3. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
2. Horizon Zero Dawn
1. Super Mario Odyssey

The Sony fans put faith in their own kind, hoping they would create the same buzz that Nintendo fans did with their franchise.

Thing is many fans expected the other guy to buy the game while they would pass or wait. Turns out many had that mentality. Shame, this game COULD have been elevated to multimillion seller.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I was hyping this game up, and I haven't bought it yet, so you might be right

I'll have it by the end of January, I swear.

Personally, I still think it would be a great game for a bundle, especially in a two/multiple game bundle. It's a good game for families and putting it in a bundle or on PS+ would be a good way to build the franchise fanbase for the future. It would also be a way to promote the Vita by giving PS3 owners a Vita game for free. From the beginning, I said that I thought Sony had modest expectations for this game, but bigger hopes for the franchise.

Ultimately, sales for this game are going to be cut short by the arrival of the PS4. This is a title that would normally sell more by word of mouth or indirect advertising than by direct advertising--in other words, it would have legs--but the timing of the release will likely cut that short.

My belief has always been that Sony created this game, not necessarily for individual sales, but to be another feature of the Playstation brand. It's there to fill a niche. I think it will one day become a PS+ mainstay.

What kind of annoys me when I read threads like this is that, for some reason, none of the fans of other consoles ever reference my opinion or the opinions of others who didn't say anything outlandish. You never read, "lol playstations fans have modest expectations for this game." Instead, it's always something like, "lol playstation fans thought this game would sell 20m lololol." I mean, wait? The hell? Twenty people can say 1m but if a couple of people say 20m then THEY are the ones that get quoted as representatives of everyone who games on a particular device? It's really hard to take anyone seriously who uses extremes to create gross generalizations. Yes, you're going to get under the skin of the ignorant, but people with intelligence will be face-palming at you.

without generalising how else would he get to attack the sony fanbase?

i don't really think anyone here believes he made this thread for any other reason

edit : he didn't, for example, make a thread on why people were predicting the wii u would sell over 4 mil as kitler said and given the gaming company he choses to align himself with i'm not surpirsed

I think that's just a lack of knowledge on the poster.  Richardhutnik is many things, but he doesn't actually dislike any company.  He DOES however make his own boardgames and such and therefore is particularly interested in why things sell and don't sell.

As for the Wii U.  That's just a boring ass thread because all it boils down to is "There was never enough supply at launch."  So "overestimated supply" is about as far as you'd get in that thread.

I have things I dislike about most companies out there at this point.  It doesn't mean I want them to drop out completely.  You say Microsoft with me and I will say "Borg".  I am doing phone tech support for Apple, so now i have a bit pro-spin that way, because sale of iOS products keeps me employed as a contractor.  As fr as Nintendo goes, there is a HUGE nostalgia factor for me, but they aren't the end all.  For me, Sony issues I may have are fanboy stuff, and that sneering mentality of gloating I observed when I saw Sega go down.  I have strong dislike for that, so if I can tweak that, I will end up doing that.  Part of that is individuals who don't seem to know of videogames prior to the Playstation brand appearing, and thinking Sony is the end all and be all, when it isn't.  It is significant enough though, and the PS2 is a system to own for me and keep, because I have numerous retro game compilations on it.  The PS3 produced some of the top titles for me this generation, with myself being a big fan of Sackboy, the Uncharter series, and Infamous.  And I do have an interest in sales, or else, why would I be here?

As for this thread, I get curious about the spin involved, and why the heck things get raved about?  I think the post about hyping and hoping others buy on, while you don't, is an interest insight, by the way.  But there is this trend, that leaves people disappointefd and brands things as a flop when it doesn't meet the self-generated hype.

As for All-Stars, I think it is REALLY cool that Sony would mash up their characters.  BUT, i seriously wish they would do something different, or heck, borrow from Powerstone, or something else.  Smash Bros., at its core, is a 16 bit title.  This si fine, but couldn't Sony of put something new on the map?

I think towards the end of the PS3 lifecycle Sony is basically refusing to market any software on the console & only marketing the hardware itself. I would imagine it was a decision that was made some time ago. I would think advertising budgets for software this late into the generation is something they aren't willing to spend.

All of this is clearly reflected in games sales. All of these sequels should EASILY be selling 1million, at the very least. Infamous 1 sold more copies than Infamous 2, when the PS3 userbase was much smaller. That's a BIG PROBLEM.

I would think all efforts are being put into PS4 at this point. Nothing will change for the last year, lack of advertising and all. PS4 on the other hand will be much different. Can't wait for all the news on PS4/720.

What Sony Santamonica did with God of War Ascension is exactly what should've occured for Playstation Battle Royal. Everytime I see the multiplayer in that game I think, Sony should've just saved money and let Santa Monica make Allstars and put the characters in an arena and fashion like that game with the powerstone elements.

At least it would have its own unique style today, involving a game that isn't really patterned after much.  No one is doing Powersstone today.  I wish companies would see good games for their own merit, rather than go, "Gee, that sells, let's copy it... but of course tweak it enough so people don't think it is the same thing".

Done right, Sony could smack Smash Bros. now.  As of now, is All-Stars also supposed to get Smash Bros. fans to switch to the Playstation platform?
