Forums - Sales Discussion - When will the PS2 stop selling?

pezus said:

Hold the tucking phone! Sony have stopped shipping PS2s to Japan. PS2 is barely selling in USA and Western-Europe. Yet, Sony manage to ship several million PS2s each year and I think they predicted around 3m shipments for it this fiscal year that ends in March 2013. This means it's still selling in many countries, just not much of it in the countries we directly estimate here.

My question to you is thus: When can we say PS2 has stopped selling everywhere? Will it be this year (2013) or the next perhaps?

I'm going to say it will happen early 2014, what about you?

As an additional question, what do you think PS2s final sales numbers will look like? My guess is right around 160m shipped, announced by Sony when they announce its discontinuation.

What? The PS2 is still almost doing Vita's numbers? That's crazy.

Probably after 2013 holiday season. So spring 2014 for the major markets. However, they will probably still sell them in the non major markets for a few more years.

158m

I think I read somewhere around here that those sales mainly come from emerging markets. If that's the case, I don't think Sony will stop production any time soon, at least as long as they still can get the parts needed for the production.

yea i'd say 160m. i also depends on whether they are making money in north america.

I would say in time for their FY2013 report, so they can include the final numbers in there. PSP might be discontinued, as well. They will most likely pump out a larger than normal final shipment, so I can see it ending ~160M-165M shipped, which will end up being sold within a year or two. My guess is they are going to start pushing the PS3 in those markets, since with next year's price cut, it will be deemed cheap enough. This is another reason I think the PS3 will only be ~10%-15% down next year.

Bold sounds about right. I don't know about it reaching 165m though. It should just scrape past 160m.

That's why I put 160M-165M.

Though, it just depends how large their final shipment is.  Will they do a normal shipment or one last large one so store have enough stock for a year or so.  Still, you're probaly right.  I would guess 162M to be the maximum it could reach.

I agree with the OP in that the PS2 will probably cease to ship during the begining of 2014. As for what the final numbers will be, I think it's likely that PS2 will end up around 160-165M.
