Forums - Sales Discussion - Global Up 22nd Dec. YOY: HW DOWN 1m & SW DOWN 15m!!

All the old consoles have really died this year:

X360 / PS3 in 2008: 21m

X360 / PS3 in 2009: 23m

X360 / PS3 in 2010: 27m

X360 / PS3 in 2011: 28m

X360 / PS3 in 2012: 23.5m (22.8m through Dec 22)

All three in 2008: 45m

All three in 2009: 54.3m

All three in 2010: 44.5m

All three in 2011: 39.6m

All three in 2012: About 29m

It's probably fair to expect PS3 / X360 to drop 20-30% in 2013, to 17.5m or so, with Wii only doing 2-3m for the whole year. Wii U should be 10-15m though (120k-180k * 43 weeks, plus nine big holiday weeks would be 10-15m)

Once again, you Nintendo haters need to really hide your true colors better.

3DS still beasting, as expected, and Wii U will pick up in sales. Man, the Vita should do much better than that. The gap between X360 and PS3 is great for Sony, but doubt they care, given the crisis they are in. Overall, worse than last year, but the fact that handheld gaming is still kicking is great news for the video game industry. Surprised the DS is still selling great, but there were plenty of sales for it and the 3DS at my local Target.

You really shouldn't make such statements when you really don't have anything to base them on. Wii U sales MIGHT pick up, they might not.

Nintendo knows what they are doing. They won't just screw up for their next home console. Not even two months in, and everyone is making judgements. Just compare the Xbox360, PS3, and Wii U launch.

Nintendo aren't some omniscient power - they might have made a mistake.

Comparing the 360/Wii/PS3 launches are irrelevant as the market was vastly different back then, plus those consoles weren't competiting against the previous generation, whereas the Wii U is fighting the PS3/360 head on with the volume of identical ports it has - there has been no "PGR3" yet for it.
Either way, you can't claim Nintendo sales will pick up as that is not a fact, just speculation.

What is fact, is that Nintendo had this same problem with the 3DS. How did that turn out? Yes, it is pure speculation, but saying that the Wii U is suddenly flopping is just as judgemental, perhaps even more so.

I have to admit I'm really pleased and surprised with PS3 performance. I think most of our regular 360 supporters didn't expect such an outcome. The lead of PS3 was supposed to vanish during holiday period.

I think most people expected the 360 to have a global price cut too.  The only region it did get a price cut (albeit temporary) it easily outsold the PS3.  Sony and Microsoft both made mistakes, Sony should have released the 12GB in the US and Europe should have been given a proper price cut by Microsoft.  I think the inevitable 360 price cut next year will mean the PS3 will have to wait till 2014 before it can overtake, it needed to do better over the holidays to overtake in 2013 imo.

It does seem interesting that launch aligned the PS3 is declining quicker now.  Its been a strange generation.

A price cut for XBox 360 at this point would do absolutely nothing

Keep dreaming...

LOL. The 360 had a price cut this holiday and yet it still declined massively YOY.

Wasnt that temporarily price-cut NA only?

Yes, and that's the 360s strongest region. It is down 26% YOY in USA Alone according to VGChartz http://www.vgchartz.com/yearly/2012/USA/

I am ashamed of being European, Wii, DS and Vita beating WiiU

Well, the same happened in America.. except for vita. So you hate the fact that vita outsold wiiu in europe ?

Don't really get what does vita need to sell more...

Lower price(obviously) and the big RPGs(in Japan).

In the West portable God of War and maybe another Uncharted could really push systems.

The price cut was for the whole year? Ridiculous comparison when talking about the holiday price cut in the US.

the price cut was recent.

this week the 360 is down 12.7% YOY.

Well holidays is where it outsells the other 9 months of the year so I don't think its that ridiculous of a comparison.
Those of you who are good with graphs/charts feel free to compare the last 10 weeks of last year to the last 10 weeks of this year.

Also, I can't believe you people are forgetting that $99 Xbox 360 with 2year contract. It didn't have that last year did it?

The price cut next year will probably not be for all year, either.  Unless MS just keeps the current price cuts in place.  And this '12's pricecut was for 3 months, 2 of which are the busiest shopping months of the year.  There was also $150 360 bundles during Black Friday and many stores offered the $199 SKUfor $179 afer Black Friday.  The 360 will still end ~25% down YOY.

@ VGKing

I completely forgot about the $99 360 plan.  Good memory you have there.

Yeah, as I predicted.

Wait until you see the drop the 360 and PS3 have next year.

i know, I know... Huge games... Ps3 could eve be flat.....yadda yadda yadda

It won't be flat, but most likely it will help the PS3 only be down ~10%-15%.  The 360, on the other hand, will have another ~20%-25% drop.

No one is saying it is flopping; it just isn't doing that well compared to it's older and cheaper rivals. The 3ds is a handheld, so again that is a pointless comparison due to market differences. Until the Wii U shows something that dramatically seperates itself from the 360 and PS3, then it will be seen as a rival to those two consoles and therefore their sales will be compared. In that sense, the Wii U is not performing very well at all.
