It is still about 7 million behind Super Mario bros. But the Wii still has a few more years of life and last week Mario Kart Wii was number 32 on the global chartz. The legs have been amazing and the game has not even hit Player Choice status yet. I know it is called something else these days, but I cannot remember for the life of me. I cannot find where to see how much it has sold this year alone, but I am sure it is several million. Vgchartz needs to add a search option "by year released". For instance I would like to see how much games on the Wii have sold this year that were released this year.
Can it take over the mighty Super Mario Bros?

Super Mario Bros was a pack in for most people who got NES.

So are you saying no? Mario kart has been a pack in, bundle, discounted, and a pretty remarkable game. I wonder if you can still play it online? I never played it. When I had the money I bought Excitebots instead. That was a fun game as well, but a litle flighty in the controls. Way too arcadey for me.
It still has a few more years to push pass Mario. Of course with digital sales I am sure Mario has much, much more! But we do not know them as far as I know.

It'll be close! I think it might hit 40mil but thats it! It will keep selling well even when MK U comes out! Look at MK7 and MKDS!

I doubt that MK Wii will sell 7 million more but who knows.

Oh yeah! I forgot about this. Used to go to game walls all the time when we had a database.
So with all of December numbers which we will not know for a few weeks it should be at 2 million this year without a price cut. More or less.

I say more!!! Also it will still have long legs for another 3-5years! Just like MKDS and NSMB are on holidays!

Even if the Wii stops being in production the games will sell for a bit longer like the GC games did. Plus the gamecube was less that half of what the Wii has been so it should be a bit longer. Backwards compatibility will help quite a bit as well. You could be right with that 3-5 years thing. Nintendo still needs to make the Wii have a permanent price reduction to 70-99 dollars as well. So it has a ways to go. I think it was 89 dollars this black friday at Walmart. So they are obviously making money at that price.
