Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Xbox's biggest obstacle heading into next generation

Sony and focusing on other things than games (for tradicional gamers).

On the other hand, they also have two great advantages, which are cash and being the "cool" console every boy wants in the US. (Almost like the PS1-PS2 era)

Game of the year 2017 so far:

5. Resident Evil VII
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
3. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
2. Horizon Zero Dawn
1. Super Mario Odyssey

Not Sony lol!

I'd say make sure that it focuses on games first multimedia 2nd.

Microsofts obstacle is Sony. They are sitting on half of the marketshare growth Sony created in the industry. They know that Sony wants it back....so that should a given.

Sure there is some competition but MS would do fine in te US regardless of what Sony does just like how it's vice versa in Japan. I think they can easily co-exist witout being a huge obstacle to each other imo

You say this with the highest confidence when both consoles share 90% of their games in the same library. Microsoft figured out that was the way to cut Sonys marketshare. From that point on it comes down to exclusives, sometimes all it really comes down to is price and offerings. Sony will be losing Japanese support if they keep supporting the west in a one sided fashion. Microsoft makes games that are western centric, so they have no issue, but Sony does because the east will respond with their lack of dollars from feeling alienated by Sony.

I think Sony and MS would always have a big dedicated fanbase unless they REALLY mess up. Price is always important, charge too much and it will drive away consumers, Exclusives are important but they aren't as big of a deal like they used it be. I honestly think MS needs to make online multiplayer free for everyone. Sony/Nintendo/Steam all have free gaming services and they're only getting closer and closer to XBL gold. That's just my 2 cents, and for Sony catering to the western crowd sure they might not be happy about that but there will always be dozens of niche devs making jrpgs exclusive to playstation to supply their needs.

The fact that Microsoft needs to stick to computers.

a) Focus (less core gaming, more casual & services)
b) Game library (more variety like alan wake even if it's not selling millions)

Seriously...do you believe if Sony had more hot JRPGs and Japanese centric games on the PS3 like previous generations the Japanese would've pushed Sony ahead of Microsoft WW? I do. More than half of Sonys Markeshare in Japan was cut because of their negligence. Its funny that no one ever talks about that on the forums either.

yess and I didn't know it was cut that much in japan, thanks for the info.

You make some great points, but I don't think it's just because Sony now focuses on the western market.  The western market is bigger so that is only logical for them to aim for the western market although MSFT has a pretty good grip on it.  But Japan seems to be catering towards handhelds now.  That is where i think the problem is with sony is they are focusing the Vita on the western market.  Just my opinion though.  I'm sure both consoles will do fine in the west next gen.  I don't know what will happen with the PS4 in the east though.  Im sure they will do fine but you are right that they need to start focusing on that market a little more.  Some people has pointed out that Japan is irrelevant and that may be the case for Xbox but it is a great luxury for sony.  It evens sony and msft out a little bit.
