We'll see in the next few days if rumors pick up. If recent articles are correct about lowering production costs, which IMO, is not impossible, then it might just happened. Sony has pulled alot of unexpected (at least to many members) moves this generation. I think when Kaz Hirai took over, getting the price down to $299 as quickly as possible was a major priority.
"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY." --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Wow, I so hope for this...if it happens, I'll buy a second one for my living room for the blu-ray player. I get so damned tired of moving mine around.

Sony was expecting to lose money at launch and sell twice as many systems as they have by now. So if you think of it that way, they only lost half of what they expected to lose. :) The more consoles you have the more money you make in licensing.
Are you sure that they (whoever started this 'rumor' of a price drop for PS3) that Sony would be releasing a BLU-RAY PLAYER for $299? Sony cannot afford to be bleeding another billion. Everyone I know back at my University thinks that Sony is just REALLY desperate trying to find a place for their PS3 to fit in in the market.

Oh, I also laughed a lot at the comment that Sony can lose billions on the PS3 and make it up with Blu-Ray. If that's the case then so can Microsoft who's profits are waaaaaaaaaaay bigger than the PS3. Also I find it funny that he thinks MS' shareholders would not be willing to lose money on the Xbox yet Sony shareholders are willing to spend it all. You need to stop being a fanboy and start cultivating yourself with knowledge. I propose you start reading at least the Money section in a big newspaper like USA today so you can start cultivating your mind with knowledge. Whenever you're more informed you can move up to something like maybe the Economist but that might take a few years, ha!
There are already BD players on the market for 299. From Sony and Samsung. As for this particular rumor.......it is false. I was just checking over inventory on the 80GB PS3 accross the nation for my store, and it seems that the 80GB version is in pretty limited supply these days. The 40 GB is everwhere though.
I really hope this is true!
But I don't believe Sony would do that.
Is the Sony card deal applicable to this 300$ PS3? A 200$ 40GB model is hard to resist.
