Why doesn't Microsoft stufios buy a few Japanese studios , the ones that come to my mind are inis and grounding inc and cave or mistwalker and capcom ... They have the money so why don't they ?

Even when microsoft payed for exclusivity of nearly every single big console jrpg in 2006/2007, the 360 wasn't doing very well in Japan. Massive franchises like Resident Evil would be worth a lot less if exclusive to the xbox. It just isn't worth it from a business perspective, for the small bump in Japanese marketshare.

Not many japanese studios are really worth MS's money or time.

Too much effort/money for too little return, I would imagine.

They bought a lot of Japanese exclusivity at the start of the gen and while it has helped them gain a bit of ground, it probably wasn't the amount the needed/hoped for.

They're all about handhelds anyway. There's only so much life left in home consoles over there (in my opinion), so again it comes down to not being worth the return.

this is very true, handhelds are what's big in japan over a home console. To sum it all up, Japanese just are not intrested in the xbox.

Then why didn't Microsoft ever make an actual handheld

Microsoft tried to get Japan's attention by getting exclusive RPG's like Lost Odyssey and making others like Final Fantasy XIII multiplatform but it didn't work. Only the hardest of the hardcore care about Xbox in Japan

Xbox One, PS4 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch will sell better than Wii U Lifetime Sales by Jan 1st 2018

There is no need for them to cater to japan in such a way. Besides its not worth it to buy a lot of studios. better to have a few that have great exclusives, and to rely on third parties.

Because they already have the Windows Phone, I guess. Not to mention that the Vita is not really a good sign for portables catering to hardcore gamers.

Because most japanese game developers are loyal to sony and nintendo
