Xbox 720 in beta; AMD HD 8000M to power next-gen consoles?

AMD HD 8000M could power the PS4 and Xbox 720 if a slide from AMD is to be believed.

It says that AMD GPUs are the “graphics technology of choice in game consoles”. Now they could be talking about Xbox 360 and the Wii U, but why even release a slide at this point? The AMD HD 8000M is a mobile chip and this should be really surprising to many, but that chip actually has a higher performance than the GPUs in current gen consoles, and the Nintendo Wii U.

Since power efficiency will be the main target for console manufacturers like Microsoft and Sony, this seems to make the most sense because, a fully-fledge desktop GPU which has been modified to fit the consoles will still draw a significant amount of power and generate heat. The power budget should be maximum 300W, like the original PS3 model, however, considering the Wii U has a minuscule power draw, it looks like the other platform holders could be targeting this chip.

As you can see from this chart the power of the said chip is quite stellar.

It doesn’t seem not seem outside the realm of possibility that they will be using this chip. It’s easily better than the one in the Wii U.

The guy who has leaked the Durango dev kit pics, called “SuperDAE“, has said that the Xbox 720 or Xbox 3 is officially in the beta stage and he is awaiting his updated dev kit. He has since deleted all the tweets but we do have a screen grab of it below courtesy of a NeoGAF member.

Take all this with a grain of salt obviously, but things are starting to get really interesting as we approach next year where the next-gen consoles from Microsoft and Sony could be announced.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Even if true, we are talking about a pretty low spec 7xxx series chip, since 8xxxm is based off those.

I've seen so much of those 8xxxM slides on VGC I'm beginning to wonder if AMD has viral marketers.

There's been no new information on 720/PS4 for about six months. Still nothing new. Yet the terrible articles continue.

I look at that as largely a promotional item referencing AMD Radeon technology in game consoles (which it seems that it will be in all of the next gen of systems). I am not an AMD fan in any stretch (GTX 690 owner here) but if 8000 is their current version or their coming soon version I am going to guess it is almost certainly not specifically in any future console or those consoles will cost way too much for consumers in this economic climate.

That card seems on par with HD7870m (from shader/GFLOPS/clock specs), which performs around HD7750, and it's only some 5x as powerful as Xenos (which doesn't really go well with those 8x rumours) and more than 3x less powerful than top end (single GPU) PC cards - I really doubt that MS would allow themselves for that to be only card inside NextBox. As for Sony, maybe, but either as something that is addition to what's inside A10, or if GPU inside A10 is meant just for HSA approach, as main GPU (which I hope it's not the case).

Not sure it matters though, even if they use something like a 8800M which is pretty current tech per say, it'd be at about 1/3 the power of an unlocked 6950, yet people are talking shit about how weak the Wii U is when I keep saying they'll all be weak no matter what lol.....

They won't cost that much, they are not even powerful. What AMD(ATI) does well is designing their videos card really well on a hardware level where Nvidia excels at software engineering, they are pretty much on par other than Nvidia having PhysX in some games.

It's about 6x less poweful than top end single GPU, not only 3x, it's pretty weak.

Nextbox won't use any chip you already know,it will like Xenos

PS4 not sure, but seems some people forget about 7970m and future 89xxm

power efficiency to be the main target for next gen?I don't think so.

with power efficience you won't sell new consoles when the graphics look only slightly better than current gen and there would be no real need for some new chips.By optimizing the ps360 cpu/gpu and more transistors you may reach twice the power and power efficiency of the current gen and you can keep most of the ps360 production facilities=no need for this amd mobile chip.
the only interessting thing;if this mobile chip is really more powerful than the wii u than its big brother(immobile pc chip)could be a very powerful monster and very useful for the next gen.
