Five Million Wiis in Japan
And four going on five million sellers.

January 22, 2008 - Just like it is everywhere else in the world, the Wii is a huge hit in its home territory of Japan. How big? Today, Famitsu.com reported that the console has, as of January 20, topped the five million sold mark.

In all, the system sold 5,019,337 units from its launch on December 2, 2006 to January 20, 2008. This figure comes from Enterbrain, Famitsu's publisher and also a major game industry sales tracking firm.

It took the Wii sixty weeks to reach the five million mark. While a bit behind the DS's fifty-six week record, the Wii did beat the PlayStation 2's sixty-six weeks.

Four Wii titles have topped the one million mark. The best selling Wii game so far is Wii Sports with, according to the latest numbers issued by Enterbrain today, 2,663,938 units. Trailing behind it are Wii Play (2,139,084 units), Mario Party 8 (1,153,648) and the hard-to-find Wii Fit (1,113,626).

The Wii's fifth best selling game, Super Mario Galaxy, is at 843,961 units and continues to place high on the weekly sales charts.

Do you think there are chances for Wii to reach Ps2 lifetime sales??

Interesting ... I think the Wii offers much, much more than the other consoles listed. The only console that offered similar gameplay was the NES - with its Power Glove (I can't think of the games you could use it for).

The Wii is tracking much faster than the DS (and obviously faster than the PS2) world wide. That's a bigger deal.

The big question (and obvious one) is how long will it be able to sustain it. Was Brawl delayed to give the Wii a post-GTA boost, so that it could recover its sales

wow!! that glove is cool!!

mayby is next, after the Wii Fit board, in a newer disign, that could have been very cool!!

*sorry, the article is about Japan, not worldwide, but it's 20 million ww, and 5 million in Japan, *numbers are for Japan*

@Leny: That's the power glove for the NES, not for Wii. And it was crap.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

lol...it's Leni from "Shaman King" :p

i know it's for SNES, i'm just trying to figure out what Nintendo will think of, after the Wii Fit board, they like to revive old things...... :p

GTA?  How will that affect Wii, GTA has no Wii fit capabilities

Anyways, WW, Wii is the fastest selling console ever, and will surpass all others

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

GTA is a fairly popular game (approximately as popular as Mario Kart) that people are assuming will somehow magically sell many times as many boxes as Halo 3 sold.  But it won't have an effect on the Wii and will probably sell fewer consoles than Halo 3 did.  There is very little reason to believe otherwise.
