Forums - Sony Discussion - Would Sony be fine with a $499 price tag on the Orbis?

Let's say the $499 is actually making profit for Sony, would it be wise to do this again? It's not like the PS3 failed at it's $599 price tag, it just had a slow start. If they have a great machine with amazing features and a really good line up of launch games this may not be that problematic.

I'm not saying they should do it but let's say they profit after $400, for every million sold that $100 million pocketed. They would also have a lot of give if everything went sour and they needed to cut the price to intrigue consumers a $100 price cut would really make a big difference.

Would it be a good business idea for Sony to do this (pretend you actually own the company and this came up for discussion).

i think launching at $449.99 would be the limit for price for sony, anything above that would be bad in there current situation.

Only if it costs them 399 to make.

I think the $500 dollar and above systems are going to be a thing of the past. I dont think we will see a new system come out over the $399.99 mark from here on out.

Albion - Its Fun as Ballz !!!!!

Yes. Especially in Europe. Europeans have been paying €500 for PS2s more than a decade ago.

The electronics industry has changed, people are willing to spend more money on devices, that was not the case when PS3 launched. People pay 500 dollaz on tablets, if PS4 is advertised right, people will want to pay 500 dollaz for it aswel.

There's actually a $500+ console in almost every generation, the PS3 is the first that actually released at such a high price ($599) and turned out to be a big success.

I have a totally different opinion. A tablet and a Console are not the same thing.

It would have to have pretty awesome software for people to fork 500 euros for it in droves.

I thinks its very highly likely it will be the price. I mean people need to get real. look how much everyone pays for a fricken Iphone. compare that to a brand new console that it probably 3x the price to manufacture.

It seems too much. Especially with mini-PC consoles coming out that are going to start eroding some of the user base. (Thinking more about the Steam box, but Ouya may be disruptive in its own rights) Plus if the US Government allows itself to go over the cliff it could likely smack the entire world back into the hole it was in 2007.

I agree.  From a perception standpoint, people think of $449.99 as being a LOT less than $499.99, which they immediately equate to $500.  $449 they could get away with, I think, but that's probably the upper limit.  Anything more would hurt their early adoption rate.  $399.99 would be perfect.

They can stand to lose a small amount with early models, small enough that they would see a profit per console within a year, but not much more than that.
