Well sort of.

Sony Online Entertainment's John Smedley suggests there's a future in free-to-play on consoles.

Published on Dec 18, 2012

PlanetSide 2 is a popular game over on NowGamer and though the MMOFPS needs work - as noted in our PlanetSide 2 review - there's a lot to like about it too.

It'll also work on PS3, too, if the graphics weren't so taxing for Sony's console. So it's just as well that SOE's John Smedley is teasing something along those lines.

When quizzed on the possibility of PlanetSide 2 coming to PS3 by OPM, Smedley responded "What I’d say is – SOE has proven that we can bring our games to the PS3."

He goes further, however, "and it’s fair to say that we’ve got some other stuff out there cooking. I can’t tell you what platforms it’s for, but we’re really excited about it."

Is that saying PlanetSide 2 will come to PS4? And other exciting stuff "cooking"? Exciting.

Whatever he's talking about, it's likely to be free-to-play anyway. Smedley continued to extol the virtues of F2P on PS3: "We’re in a unique position. We have two operating free-to-play games on PS3 right now – DC Universe and Free Realms.

"Actually, 70% of our revenue comes from PS3. So we’re uniquely placed having helped to build the PlayStation Network in the first place. PSN has the ability right now to handle free-to-play games, and it does so very well”.

There's a future in free-to-play on consoles according to Smedley "There seems to be this argument going round that we’re going to see the last of consoles – and to me there’s this very simple delineation.

"For me my computer is in my office at home, and my TV is in my living room. Consoles are a different type of gaming for me, and I play different games on different devices.

"But I think the free-to-play model works awesomly on consoles and I think you’re going to see more of it as time goes on. It’s going to be much more prevalent on consoles”.

I've been playing this game on my PC its so addictive,  I don't think it will end up coming to ps3 , I don't think the Ps3 could handle it.....I could however see it coming to Ps4.

Around the Network

I just started to download the client now. I had no idea this game even existed, looks like fun.

34 years playing games.

The developer said it wont work on PS3 , but they're looking at other consoles (PS4)

can the ps3 even run that game

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

PS4.

They'd do well to start bringing their games to their consoles as well. Unifying all the divisions and all that.

I always thought they were kind of haphazard with the way they've done SOE games on consoles in the past. PS2 got a spin-off Everquest game but not the real deal. PSP got some new IP's, most unrelated - and some of which didn't even have online play. Just a really weird way to do things.

DCUO & Payday: The Heist on consoles is a step in the right direction. I do wonder how many people actually play them on PS3 - probably not many - but there's no reason it can't be an expanding market. Get the next Everquest on PC & PS4 simultaneously; get Planetside 2 on there eventually etc.

Yeah it would make for a good launch title for the ps4.

Free online gaming confirmed on PS4

Oh yeah! Boooooyyaaaa!!

CPU: Ryzen 7950X
GPU: MSI 4090 SUPRIM X 24G
Motherboard: MSI MEG X670E GODLIKE
RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR PLATINUM 32GB DDR5
SSD: Kingston FURY Renegade 4TB
Gaming Console: PLAYSTATION 5

The game doesn't even feel that powerful; why wouldn't the PS3 be able to handle it? Is it purely because of the large scale activity that's going on?

If you watch IGN's Up at Noon, they've already mentioned that it can't run on PS3, but hinted a possibility for the next PS.
