John Carmack, the co-founder of id Software and lead programmer behind Doom, has taken to Twitter to reveal that the majority of next generation games will run at 30fps, as opposed to 60fps. A number of people were hoping for 1080p and 60fps, but Carmack has been assured that this isn’t going to happen.

Bet with ninjablade: 1 month sig control. He wins if the PS4 outsells the Wii U 2:1, I win if it doesn't. Based on the first 6 months of both consoles.

30 fps is enough for most type of games.

60 FPS doesn't always mean 'better'. It is better suited for action games like Bayonetta and Call of Duty. But games like Pikmin 3 don't need this. With 30 FPS it's also easier to get more detailed graphics.

That's fine with me. I rarely even notice the difference. Still, I think it's something that will improve dramatically as the generation progresses.

Most games on consoles don't need it anyway. 30 fps with motion blur is very smooth on most games and I'm guessing will be the standard. Only twitch shooters and sports games really benefit from it.

i hope so. i get more satisfaction out of more detailed environments than i do out of the higher frame rates. only a few games move fast enough to need it anyways like fighters. if SSB and PSAS were the only 60 fps games next gen i'd be fine with that.

Still target 30? So they can do more but need a push? I am starting to wonder how powerful these new systems are. If they aren't going to live up to people's expectations and aren't much more capable then wii u is then it doesn't have much to worry about with multiplats.
One more thing to complete my year = senran kagura localization =D

i thought so. i mean, they could make as example uncharted 4 with great graphics and 60fps and 1080p or the same with 30fps and even better graphics. what will naughty dog do? or other developers who would have to increase the res and the fps and still improve the general graphics to make it a real difference to this gen.
higher res + 2x as much fps costs so much more power, i really don't see that as standard for most games next gen.

if they have 30fps instead of 60 fps they can make the games look better. So I think it's fine that they target 30fps.(with the exceptions of some genres like fighting games)
