Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why Nintendo Must Launch A New Console In 2014

Have you noticed that the tech-demos Sony and their partners shown off before their systems are released tend to have reduced detail, fewer effects, a choppier frame-rate and are rendered at a lower resolution when these games are released?

I have a theory about why Sony and their partners have the opposite trend of Nintendo and their partners, Sony tech-demos are run on high performance hardware to simulate what Sony believes their system can do while Nintendo's tech demos are early versions of a game running on an incomplete engine.

I remember a lot of "target renders" for the PS3 that will probably only be achieved by PS4, so you could be right. But what about all other Sony systems? PS3 seems to be an exception in quite a few areas, is this another area? I should add that the KZ and MS demos were CG, the MGS GZ and Watch_Dogs demos were real time.

I know we never got any bullshit for the PS VITA. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFv49yjsA2U Comparable to ass creed or Uncharted, will be surpassed in a couple years probably.

Sony claimed they would get close to Toy Story visuals with the Playstation 2.  That never happened.

I couldn't find any target renders, though.

So apart from one silly claim nothing of the sort PS3 received? I saw some tech demos for PS2 (YT it :) and they seemed accurate... I don't think we can call this a habit of Sonys

I don't get why people refuse to think that the WiiU is not next-gen, or that the other consoles will be a marked improvement over the current ones...

May I please stop having to reply to the same comment over and over again? Seriously, please.

8th Generation: 3DS, PS Vita, Wii U. Wii U IS next generation.

"Awwww, but it does not bring that kind of graphical improvements that are needed, blah blah". Nothing to do with "generation". If you want, you can say that, in your opinion, PS 4 and XBOX 3 (yeah "3", since it's the 3rd XBOX, until we have an official name... 720... lol... 14355! Bingo!) will be leagues and leagues ahed of Wii U. So much that nobody will want to play games on it. All the things you want. Again: nothing to do with generation talking.

I love my Wii U. You, clearly, don't love it and you don't want one. Again: nothing to do with generations.

Have a nice day.

Good Lord...

I'm uncertain how you arrived at this conclusion. I'm agreeing with everything you're saying, and I disapprove (nor can I see how) people who say it isn't next-gen. I don't see why people would think this. My Wii U is great (which if you visited the site regularly you'd know already), I'm loving ZombiU and NintendoLand in particular (you can add me on it, search for Conegamer and you'll find me under Cone2. I'm in the stickied thread, and am friends with many on this site).

Perhaps re-reading my comment would be in order; and regardless, no need to lash out like that at anyone.

GCN was overpowered in comparison to the sixth generation winner. And Wii was underpowered in comparison to the seventh generation losers.

The Wii won because it was deemed the best and most wanted console by consumers. If Wii was a fad, it's a fad that lasted about 4 and a half years. That's pretty impressive. The Wii should be congratulated -- not chastised -- for introducing the world of video games to more people than ever before.

The next consoles from Sony and Microsoft WILL be more powerful than Wii U, but that's why the original article takes no amount of courage or insight, as I said. The question is: will that power come at too great a cost, and will that power tip the market in favor of Sony or Microsoft. The original article doesn't do much to unpack those questions.

So the console that sold 100 million introduced more people to gaming than ever before than the handhelds and homes consoles that have sold over 100 million?  Go figure.

Dude, why so sarcastic? Come on, it's pretty clear what I meant by that.

Though people don't refuse it being the 8th generation, it's functionality would be put to question/test against other next-gen consoles. So, there you can find a reason as to why people actually tend to think so.

I get why people think this, but until we see the other consoles we don't know for certain. And its the next console, so must be next gen.

While I agree Nintendo will be forced to come out with another console early (probably 2016), it's not for these reasons. Nintendo doesn't need to or want to compete for the core audience. But it sure as hell will need to defend itself from tablets and Android/iOS based home or portable gaming consoles from stealing it's market.
