Global launch sales (relative comparison)

WiiU: 1,817,166
Wii: 2,071,242
PS3: 524,687
X360: 948,162

I can't believe the Wii U has done 88% of the Wii's launch sales. That's even more impressive given weak Euro sales.  Just imagine if the Europe sales were stronger...we'd be talking about a launch that's outpacing the Wii.

I can't believe I'm saying it...but the Wii U launch is a smashing success so far.  There's just no other way to see it.

You'd think not yet it's happening. Comparing the Dreamcast to the WiiU is just a joke mazty. It's sold %88 of the winner of the 7th gen, lets label it a fail?

Common sense isn't so common these days.

Nintendo needs games. They need to win 3rd party support and over the years we've seen Nintendo slowly gain back support they've lost (Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, etc) but we need more. Imagine FF XV on Wii U! The next Metal Gear game. Nintendo needs to do some serious thinking because if they don't, PS3 and Xbox 360 are going to continue getting the games, and PS4 and Nextbox are going to continue where those left off. So its on Nintendo now. Its easier to knock down a tower than build it, but they better build fast cause its a short time frame, and games take 1 1/2 - 2 years to make.

Man, I hear ya! They need that 3rd party support! But I think they did the right thing publishing Bayo2 - I think that gives a lot of good faith. What they need is Western studios to back them up; I think Japan will be in their pockets this gen...

Exactly. Nintendo does fairly well in Japan but they need to do more there. Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil, Tales of, Dark Souls, Street Fighter, Sleeping Dogs, etc I can go on and I agree they need to figure out what to do with the Western devs. Let me ask you a question, should Ninty shell out $ for support?

@mazty; I have to agree with you that Nintendo really should have had a game on launch day that looked better than what PS360 has to offer, or at least on par with some of their better looking games... Hopefully they'll show something like that come next year....

Sadly looking at their hardware I doubt they will be able to surpass what this current gen offers. If the next Xbox or Playstation both use 200W or more, then the Wii U is going to find itself in deep shit.

Well, they won't be able to outbid MS for an exclusive, but perhaps it wouldn't be such a dumb idea to pay SE to port Sleeping Dogs, or Ubisoft to port Watch Dogs... But I guess it would be cheaper, and easier, just to swoop up other projects the way they did with Bayo2. What's your take on the whole situation?

Oh, you're one of thoooose! Not thinking Wii U is part of the 8th gen =) now it all makes sense!

Wii was competing with PS360 - and did it very well. In fact, it was so good at competing that it won the gen. Wii U is part of the 8th gen of home consoles braw! And as far as I can see it's completely dominating! 100% market share. That's pretty good. But you're right, it could have had 110% or 200% market share!!

If the WIi U was not competiting directly with the 360 and PS3, then it wouldn't have so many ports and be looking for so many ports e.g. GTA 5.
The Wii was not aimed at core gamers like the other two consoles. It's like comparing Ferrari sales to Ford sales - different markets.

But whatever. Dreamcast syndrome has kicked in where people are just warping the situation in order to paint a favourable one. Time will tell just how well it's doing but with fuck all dev support, I can't see it lasting long.

Well, it's obvious tha you don't know/understand that GAMES sell SYSTEMS. It's quite basic and simple really: (good) games sell more consoles, becuase that's what people use their consoles for - playing games. So if there is no games on a new system people won't buy it, because they wanna play them games. THAT'S why it's getting ports; to build a library of games that will entice people to buy the system for. How can you not see this? AND this is common practice in every new gen.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm getting at...a lot of the games on offer are multiplatform for last-gen consoles....

Ports won't entice people as the likelyhood is that they already own either a 360 or PS3 because they've been on the market for over 6 years.
The Wii U has no game that screams next-gen like PGR3 did for the 360. It has games that look graphically on par with what is already on offer, made even more similar with cross play and xbox tablet-thing-system.

Go away kid. You have no idea what you're talking about.

As I've understood it the architecture is much more modern and should help with the visuals. Now, I'm no teachie, so I don't have a clue, but I'm quite sure that PS4 won't be a generational leap over Wii U, meaning Nintendo should be able to get good/decent ports of PS4 games at least.

They wouldn't have to outbid them! If Mircrosoft and Nintendo both went to SE for exclusive rights to a game, I'm very confident that Nintendo would win the rights everytime because rpgs generally sell better on their systems anyway (of course Nintendo would offer some money too as I'm sure M$ would).

And I totally agree that they should pay for those games. It wouldn't be dumb but smart at all. Nintendo for one should know that games like sleeping dogs and watchdogs don't generally sell well on Nintendo consoles, so with a little financial support Nintendo could get almost any 3rd party games the HD twins have.

As for the next statement on if it would be cheaper, well maybe you're right, it probably would be cheaper to do that. I mean they still have to oay for dev costs and publishing duties, but its to their benefit kind of win/win situation.

Finally I believe Nintendo should do both, pay a little bit for 3rd party games, AND pull a bayo on other games. The only problem with the bayo idea is I can't think of any other game they could do that on.....

(Oh and Nintendo should open more in house dev studios. They apparently always find good talent :P
