Nokia rising: stock breaks through $4 a share upon news of strong demand

For the first since mid April, Nokia’s stock has bounced nearly 5% on the day to put it at $4 a share. The news appears to be due in part to a report from Liberum Capital (reported by the Economy News) that the Lumia 920 is still selling well and what’s more, that it’s coming back in stock.

We reported yesterday that Amazon Wireless and even AT&T stores were now stocking the white, matte black and glossy red Lumia 920s for immediate purchase. The timing is crucial as we head into the last two weeks of the sales quarter and of course the holiday shopping season, as this gives Nokia an opportunity to try and meet presumed demand for their flagship phone.

Nokia’s stock took a hit this year, reaching a low of $1.63 back in July. Upon release of Windows Phone 8 though and some cautious optimism, the price has steadily crept back up especially in the last few days.

It’s still trading below its 52 week high of $5.87 a share but Nokia may be on the verge of turning things around. Between positive reports of the Lumia 920, restructuring of the company and its leasing of its headquarters, investors are now seeing an opportunity with the Finnish company.

Of course the real day of reckoning will be when Nokia reports its 4th quarter results January 24th as that is when solid sales figures are expected to be revealed. Liberum Capital estimates that their sales report will be positive:

"With almost two weeks still to go in the quarter we believe demand is likely to be high once again, leading to overall shipments of Lumia 920s likely to be above our current estimate of 3m units for the quarter.

"We also expect another 2m units of other Lumia models in the quarter including the Lumia 510, 820, 822, 810, 505 etc. At this point we believe volumes of the Lumia range including the 920 and the 920T are likely to remain stable in Q1’13 as well, since the phone will be shipping in volume in many key markets including China only next quarter."

Semi good news for Nokia. Too bad very few people give a shit about Nokia or Windows phones in the USA. I don't see Nokia doing that much better in a few years. They are like RIM. A past history of cellphone manufactures.

Nokia are doing everything right at the moment. Getting China Telecom to stock the 920T was a genius move, and i'm starting to here people say 'Galaxy S3, iPhone 5 and Lumia 920' in the same sentence, which can only be a good thing!

semi good?

lol

Nokia are doing everything right at the moment.  making the right deals, grabbing mind share all over the place.  This is just the start if a decent come back.

Stock up over 100% injust a few months.

and to quote an oft used phrase.... US =/= World.

No one gives a shit about Nokia is USA.  Sure USA doesn't = world but that still says something.  I might be out of the loop but I don't think that many Americans give a shit about Nokia.  Nokia will never break out.  Sure they are doing better than they did; at least they aren't releasing another N Gage.  Nokia will never mean anything to me.  Nokia will be lucky to get 10-15% market share with Windows phone.  If you ask me they might as well went with Android.

200m smartphones will be sold this quarter. 12m will be Windows Phones.

...Meaning WP's will have a 6% marketshare this quarter.

A huge jump!

Wow good for Nokia and Microsoft! I'm glad people are buying it. I think I may give it a try too. I'm sick of Android, and don't wanna give my money to Apple, so I might as well try the Microsoft phone. Plus, I have an xbox so maybe I could connect them or something..? But, do windows phone's have a lot of apps?

I disagree, the OS on the lumia is very nice and has far more personality than android. I'm currently trying to decide between a lumia or a Note

Lumia selling 5m is awesome!

I expect Lumia sales to go over 25M next year and increase in 2014 when WP8 phones drop prices and MS introduces WP8.5 next year.

Pretty Good for Nokia, WP will get more phones from other manufacters but i still expect Nokia to the top Dog in quality here.

Just got Lumia 710 and its amazing. Nokia wont die, they are rising up and with the help of Microsoft they will be the top dog again very soon.

Awesome stuff, can't wait to get one.

If Nokia can recover and hold onto a spot in the phone market, it will defy history:
