Forums - Gaming Discussion - Fanboys and exclusives

On the gamespot game of the year awards people are complaining that PS3, PC, X360, etc does not have enough exlcusives on each list.  Kevin Vanord responded.

Kevin-V-"As with every year, we choose the best games available for the platform, not the best games that are only on that platform. Each year, people seem so surprised and shocked, yet this has our policy, year in and year out. But I suppose we must say it again, year in and year out: we do not choose just exclusives. And why would we? If a game is awesome, it's awesome. We are not platform elitists."

Why do people latch on to a company that publishes a game?  I don't believe I'll ever understand this.  Maybe you guys can explain it to me, fanboys make no sense to me though because all I hear is "I want to justify my purchase by being a dick to everybody who doesn't have the same views as I do."

In fact it is why I believe we don't hear about games like Far Cry 3, Sleeping Dogs, The Walking Dead, Dishonored Assassin's Creed, etc on this site.  Because they are not exclusive.  If they were though, nobody would shutup about them.

console exclusives are definately more important then multiplatform games. multiplatform games are icing on the cake but you need cake to put the iceing on, and that's what exclusives are. cake, the reason to buy.

without Sony exclusives, i would have stayed with ninty.

We had a similar issue with our own awards while trying to figure out nominees bit that's because I find the platform awards kind of boring if they're filled with multiplayer because then they're all the same and don't seem to serve any purpose of they're own. Makes me think there should be a single award for ps360pc kind of like many sites put handhelds all together in one award, or the platform awards should only be made of exclusives so at least they'll all be different.

...

When comparing two consoles as similar as the PS3 and Xbox 360, exclusives are what tip the balance one way or the other.

So I guess taunting your console of choice's exclusives is both a way of convincing yourself you made the right choice and a way of telling the other guys "Don't cha wish your console was hot like mine?"

They do.  It's called the game of the year award.  that is why these are genre or platform awards

And I don't agree just because they are different.  They should have to earn these awards for being a better game, not just because they are exclusive.  They should make a game better than multiplatform games if they want them to be nominated.

Then what's the point of platform specific awards?  It doesn't make a lot of sense, especially when you have a platform GOTY that is different from your primary GOTY.  Let's say Borderlands 2 won the Xbox award and Halo 4 won the GOTY--where is the logic in that?  Or how about if Dishonored is nomiated for the Playstation award but not the Xbox award, while Borderlands 2 is nomiated for the Xbox award but not the Playstation award?  We've all seen stuff like this happen.

i've heard fanboy-dom is exclusive to sony. i did a survey of every gamer i know (me) and the results were: 1 sony fanboy, 0 MS fanboys, 0 nintendo fanboys. I'd say those results speak for themselves.

Yeah and I always wonder what the sites that do this kind of stuff are thinking. If I were to hand out GOTY awards, I'd keep it consistant. If a multiplatform game wins overall GOTY then it would be GOTY for all the platforms specific awards too.

The point is that it is the best of the best games on that platform.......Not the best exclusives.  people can hype up sony all stars all they want but it definitely shouldnt be on any award list for example.  And this isn't VGA awards where you have people voting for the games.  That always turns out to be biased and incorrect.  This is editors choice awards. And GoTy will have everything from all platforms, not just one.

A lot of that has to do with voting.
