But the Vita did get a price cut... Europe - http://n4g.com/news/1111124/playstation-vita-gets-a-significant-price-drop-after-all

which isn't permanent, but still good for a very significant discount. At least until the 31st of december!

so a sale is a price cut now?

Nope because 3DS went down to $139.99(certain places) or $159.99 XL bundle (this last day best buy)

Price drop is when permanently stay so we have to wait next year for both systems

If the Vita can reach and surpass the 3ds in sales based on a period of time judged by a price drop, then there is hope for it yet. Why? Because it demonstrates that while not having the same amount of demand, there actually is still a good amount of demand for it.

3.2 million 3ds' were sold at 250$ with no competition and 3.5 million Vitas were sold at 250+memory card, and some sold at 300+memory card when its main competitor dropped to 179$ upon release day. Don't you think there is some strength in that?

"based on a period of time judged by a price drop." What is this referring to? Try to be more specific I can't follow. Are you talking about black friday week?

As for 3.2m 3DS' sold at 250$ vs 3.6m vitas sold at 250+mem, I was under the impression that the vita was sold at 200$. Also, given the aligned launch data from Kowen we know that the 3DS surpassed the vita, so how did you get the 3.5m for Vita > 3.2m for 3DS, based on what period and paradigm?

What joeorc is trying to say nintendo cut the price while Sony kept it the same price since launch!!! He isn't saying vita doing better because its not, In the same timeframe Vita still didn't pass 3DS pre-Price drop! We all this!

Truth be told even with a price cut it wont sell as much as the 3ds at least in 2013 IMO

yes im not saying its doing better, the main point is some seem to think that just because the systems sales are not as great or as viable as other products in the market there is no way the PSVita can last, yet if that was true Sony is keeping the price the way it is for profit. and someone here thinks because they show a fancy graph that there is no way Sony could slash the price.

for all we know they have decided its not worth it to slash the price because profit is more important at this point, and that may not be in the business plan to allow a price drop at this point in time, yes plans can be changed but would they be really worth it right now?

But to simply ignore the consequence of that is ridiculous.

"But to simply ignore the consequence of that is ridiculous."

its two systems companies in this part of the market, that's like saying THE LOWER SELLING SYSTEM IS NO LONGER VIABLE, which is an opinion not a fact!

I'm showing you the facts.  Now what is your opinion of the results of the "no price cut"?

How do you think it has worked out for them?  How do you think the next 12 months will run?

My opinion is it has worked out badly and it will get worse over thenenxt 12 months.  The 3DS will leave it behind.

OK:

Q: I'm showing you the facts.  Now what is your opinion of the results of the "no price cut"

A:for profit bad for marketshare and Mind share, right now

Q: How do you think it has worked out for them?  How do you think the next 12 months will run?

A: Pretty Much How it is now, low steady sales no real stable spikes

"My opinion is it has worked out badly and it will get worse over thenenxt 12 months.  The 3DS will leave it behind."

So freaking what if the 3DS leaves it behind, if you have not noticed Nintendo has always been the front leadear in Handheld's, oh wait a min not any more iOS and Android are now. In this part of the Market Nintendo and Sony are making the top two well known Handheld systems, And right now more development studios are catering to the smartdevices just as much as the dedicated Game handhelds. So the main Point is at this point Sony has the PSVita as another choice to offer the Gamer to what Nintendo is offering, since pretty much they are the only one. So right now even with such low sales there is new games announced for the PSVita so it must not be alll that dire for the system.

It looks like holding onto this price point is not a victory for Vita, but rather a failing strategy. Since its launch 1 year and 9 months ago, every 90 days the 3DS averages sales that are equal to the entire lifetime sales of the Vita.

"It looks like holding onto this price point is not a victory for Vita, but rather a failing strategy."

that's the thing though is the consumer retail chain stop selling the PSVita through the chain yet?

until Sony gets the word that the retail chain will not carry the PSVita anymore, than it's not a failing stratagy.

The Civic Sell more unit's than the Lincoln Town Car!

but that does not take away from the point of there is still sales.

A product can have sales while continuing to fail.

I'm pretty sure the Vita price will remain where it is after the holidays.  It would be suicide for the prices all to return to the level they were prior to those deals.

I concur.

I doubt this is permanent. Sony would lose already its non-existing position if it decides to increase the price.

And the 159.99$ and 139.99$ prices were for one week only. Nintendo does not implement these price cuts but retailers to attract consumers. It's like comparing apple to oranges.....

So Sony outprices themselves with the hardware, and it's something good that they can't cut the mrsp? I just can't understand that way of thinking. It can't be good that, selling less than 50% of what they intended to sell during the first year, they can't do anything regarding the mrsp to improve sales. Some of you try too hard to fool yourselves.

"So Sony outprices themselves with the hardware, and it's something good that they can't cut the mrsp?"

just like the PS3 right?

business plan is what you have when you set up the product, and you pretty much go by that until you have to change it or its too late to do so, do you think Sony could account for Nintendo dropping the price of the Nintendo 3DS down to $169.99 only four months before the PSVita was to release?

Nintendo 3DS hardware vs What Sony put into their Hardware at the Price point both machines were @

i mean really? a Quad core A9 device, with the very same Quad core  GPU that is in the iPad 3 with enhancements with a dedicated 128 MB of ram for the GPu vs outdated Arm 11 with 6 MB of Dedicated GPU ram that is in the 3DS yea, its the exact same thing.

TO expect that is in my opinion quite unreasonable.

"A product can have sales while continuing to fail."

I mean what's continuing to fail? 2 million per year, 3 million per year? when there is only Two main  Dedicated handheld game systems in this part of the market?

Look at it this way Nintendo even with its fantastic sales get's about 23 million a year, which is very fantastic, but on the same token is no where near the market leader in smartdevices. the point being is this market is no longer the leader anymore, its a very good size market but its main driver of the market is no longer the case even for Nintendo, and that is saying quite a bit.

the fact of the matter is more 2rd party developers are making game's for smart devices over dedicated Game handhelds now.
