While checking trends on google is interesting, it is really complicated to properly analyse searches to determine relative popularity ...

For example, people searching for the PS4 may search 'Playstation 4' or 'PS4' while many of the searches grouped into the 'XBox 720' group may be related to queries about whether games run at 720p on the XBox 360.

It's a pretty lazy article, as well as flawed.

I was going to give a long post explaining how ridiculous this article is, but that graph summed it up perfectly.

Another possible explanation could be the legion of MS evangelists and astroturfers endlessly scouting the net, looking for any negativeness against MS and its products and bravely fending it off. (Have you ever noticed how swiftly, here in VGC, "citizen k" swoops down on every thread with any negativeness against MS or even just too positive for Sony according to his tastes? )

Interesting, but early interest doesn't necessarily equate to commercial success.  If the next Xbox has zero backwards compatability, DRM to prevent used disc sales (or even inability to take a game to a friends house), or other glaring flaws, then people won't buy it if the Playstation offers a better experience.  Right now the only people googling PS4 or xbox720 are fans of each system and not the general public/mass market buyers.  And all information we think we know if likely 95% false--with so many guesses there will be certainly be a few people hit right.  Heck, it turns out Durango and Orbis are both false.  Even XBox 720 is something that was made up on a blog and never came from any MS leaks.

Maybe once we actually have confirmed specs and features about both machines then we can predict which will be better.

While I think search trend cannot really be used a prediction, you did not read past the US numbers as I can see :)
The OP is showing Worldwide numbers as well as US breakdown...

On the OP: This Vita/3DS numbers says everything, I actually think that the Playstation brand is still a bit behind in term of brand awareness.
