Forums - Gaming Discussion - Next Gen consoles!

What is with the absurd amount of consoles arriving this next gen!? There is the WiiU, Xbox 720, PS4, SteamBox, Ouya, and the one I just found about while reading Game Informer, the Alienware X51. I don't know if I should be scared for the industry or happy for it..what about you guys?

That's it. We're in for another video game crash.

WayForward Kickstarter is best kickstarter: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1236620800/shantae-half-genie-hero

Doesn't seem that crowded when you assort them with their true competitors:

Wii U, PS4, Xbox 3 (Home consoles)

Steambox (Home console/PC hybrid, no info on this aside from it exists, so it's hard to tell what its market will be)

Alienware X51 (Slightly more accessible, still expensive, PC that doesn't compete with consoles)

Ouya (?)

Alienware X51! holly f'n hell, i see alot of consoles coming out in the 8th gen. i'll be purchasing in the 9th gen.

The Steambox and the Alienware X51 aren't consoles. They are standard PCs that play standard PC games.

That leaves Ouya as the new entry and it's more like an Android phone with a controller and HDMI.

None of these things are direct competitors to the three next gen consoles.

Imagine an Android based home console that plays nothing but mobile games.

I'm aware of what it does, I just meant I don't know what it's competing with. Seems to be in its own niche category... very niche.

Agree with you, just wait until one of those steamboxes needs an upgraded graphics card or more memory to run a certain game smoother, its just a pc in a small form, and will likely be running a linux brew (since Valve has been investing in the linux side of things alot lately), and yes, Hook up your android tab or phone via hdmi with one of those remotes

Since it doesn't just play Android games straight off the marketplace, it needs dev support. And that market is already fragmented between Android phones, iOS, RIM BB10, WinPhone8, WinRT, and also tablet ports. Ouya isn't likely to get the ports it needs to survive.

What are their announced games?

There's a list of announced games here http://androidcommunity.com/ouya-games-listed-support-for-xbmc-announced-20120807/

Doesn't look particularly appealing.

It's saving grace is that it's apparantly veyr open and hackable. So it'll potential be the home console version of the PSP maybe?
