Forums - Sales Discussion - Global hardware and UK & USA software UP! - Week ending 8th December

Well, if those numbers are true, that holy shit that was a good week overall! Wii U did great! The only worries I have is Europe...

If this economic crisis continue in Europe I think that both PS720 might have just as a hard time as Wii U currently has. The up side for Nintendo then is that Wii U will be the cheapest next gen, and thus probably selling more than PS720. But hopefully something is done in EU... This cannot go on! It's like only Northern Europe has its shit together.

That has ever been the case. Southern Europe was always corrupt and dodgy and a disaster in waiting. I mean look at Italy, a convicted fraudster thinking he has a chance to get in again for Prime Minister. Nothing's changed. If nothing's changed then you're in for the same shit happening again and again.

Anyway, I'm just surprised at the adjustment for last week. I didn'note the tables got turned on PS3 and 360 to give PS3 the narrow lead for the week. I wasn;t expecting that. But things are back to expectation with the USA picking things up again for 360.

Good Japan launch for Wii U, but not beating 360 even with 306K in Japan is a fairly modest result. What does it suggest for the rest of the holidays and into 2013? As the start of the new gen Wii U should start pulling away from PS360 even before PS4/720 get announced.

Congrats DS for beating PS2

Nintendo DS (DS)

Playstation 2

That PS2 figure hasn't been updated in nearly 2 years. Sony is still shipping PS2's. PS2 is actually closer to 156 million units sold. DS is still #2.

Nice try, but Sony only announced they had shipped 153.5 million at the end of last November with no other shipment data since; Sony's last announcement was earlier this year wherre they announced it sold 500,000 units in 2011.

Do you REALLY think the PS2 has sold as well or even outsold the Vita in the last year? Where are you getting this 156 million figure from?

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

lol I was wrong! thought 360 would be on top followed by 3DS and then WiiU and then PS3 but 3DS did it with 360, WiiU then PS3! lol so close!

I wrote a thread about this issue, actually :)

I think that the continued success of Xbox 360 and PS3 might undermine the sales of ALL eighth-generation consoles, not just the Wii U.

We've never had anything like the eighth generation before, because we've never had anything like the seventh generation before. I wouldn't be shocked if the upcoming consoles from Sony and Microsoft also fail to pull away from PS360 at the beginning.

In other words, it has less to do with consumers turning up their noses at Wii U and more to do with not wanting to upgrade at all, at least not at first.

I'm the only one that wishesa success to both the Vita and the WiiU? :D

Except for 2011 being due to Kinect, I agree with the above. However 2008 was a price cut for both PS3 and 360.

Also, who cares about shipped figures? We're talking sales, or are you quoting me to talk to someone else? If PS3 ships to a broader region, where 360's shipments are more localize (which i true, PS3 ships more units outside of Europe and NA), then it makes sense that 360 is selling more of their shipment. I'll trust VGC numbers thank you.

PS3 had no price cut in 2008. There was one in Fall 2007 (to $399.99) and then not again until the redesigned PS3 came along in '09 (to $299.99).

http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/Price_cuts

PS3 had 2 models in 2008, a 40GB and 80GB model. The 80GB model had a price cut from $500 to $400 in 2008, and the 40GB model was discontinued and old stock sold at a cheaper price. The 360 price cut was more substantial (Arcade dropping $80 to $200, and other models dropping $50 to $300 and $400), but still both consoles had a price cut.

Wow, 360 hasn't had a permanent price cut in 4 years... I wonder, how much would sales jump with a permanent $130 Arcade 360, and a $200 Pro console.

Some of your information is off. First of all Sony had claimed 154.5 million had shipped at the end of FYQ2 (September 30th, 2011), and Sony had claimed 4.7 million units had shipped in the previous fiscal year. Sony also gave shipment figures up to FYQ4 (March 30th 2012).

Doing a bit of Algebra, assuming PS2 sales are 50% as strong in 2012 as they were in 2011 (which correlates with FY2012 shipments where PS2 data is included in PS3 shipments, any less and the PS3 will be selling every unit they ship if not more), I calculated PS2 will have shipped 2.7 million units in 2012, and sold 2.88 million by the years end (It sells more then it ships because it's selling old stock, and not being restocked).

So 156.72 is the number of PS2's sold by the end of 2012, which I calculated based off shipment reports. So the difference between the two is 3 million - whatever DS can get in the last month of this year.

DS can do it, but no garenteed, PS2 sales have been falling at a slow pace of 30% a year or so, where DS sales have crashed. If PS2 is still shipping 2-2.5 million a year and DS only just beat it, then DS will need a year or two to top PS2. Besides I'm sure Nintendo will announce DS's overtaking of PS2 in total sales, probably not long before they announce Wii overtaking PS1 sales.

The 360 just outsold the Wii U in its Japanese launch week. I'm not too sure if we really need the next generation of consoles as of yet. Perhaps those 2014 rumours bear more weight than we think.
