Community strategist Arne Meyer says resources were not not taken away from single-player to work on multiplayer.

Just this week, Naughty Dog confirmed that http://www.gamespot.com/the-last-of-us/">The Last of Us would feature multiplayer, but not all were thrilled by this decision. Responding to comments on the PlayStation Blog, Naughty Dog community strategist Arne Meyer defended the PlayStation 3 game's multiplayer component. He said resources were never taken away from single-player to work on multiplayer.

"We don’t approach [multiplayer] in any of our games as tacked on," Meyer said. "And we also always have separate teams working on the different components so that we can maintain full focus on making [single-player] and [multiplayer] up to our standards."

Meyer said Naughty Dog has faith that multiplayer in The Last of Us will "stand on its own," and that if there were any ever concerns of it feeling "tacked on," then the studio would not have added it in the first place.

It was not much of a surprise for The Last of Us to feature multiplayer. The company's most recent games, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, both featured multiplayer components after the original Uncharted: Drake's Fortune did not.

The Last of Us is Naughty Dog's first game outside of the Uncharted universe since 2005. It is a postapocalyptic survival game set in the United States that follows the efforts of main characters Joel and Ellie as they fight to survive.

Not every single game needs multiplayer. People must understand multiplayer is a bonus and fits better some genre like racing, party games, shooting, platforming (even then). Naughty Dogs are kind enough to put it in TLOU so the minimum is to give them credit. Those kind of games (like Uncharted) don't even need multiplayer because their single player campain is amazing.

Good to see they aren't tagging on some pointless multiplayer. I applaud this. Too much emphasis on multiplayer these days.

I'm not really here!

Yes. It's like every game must be a complete pack-in, with online functions, multiplayer, rewards, trophies, unicorns and rainbows.

They have two teams working on SP and MP seperately. I'm very, very OK with it.

Me too.  Unchated's Multiplayer turned out pretty decent so Im sure they could pull it off in this game too.  Plus the entire Naughty Dog team seems to be very talented so I would assume even though they're split up they would still do a great job.

Cheap way to add replay value without adding actual replay value. Multiplayer is probably the biggest gimmick of this generation.

EDIT- btw nothing he says in op disputes this as been tack on. Ninja Gaiden 3 could have 2 teams too and no matter how good they could have made the multiplayer..it's still tack on. Quality of the multiplayer does not decide whether its tack on or not.

Do you consider multiplayer a gimmick with no replay value?  Im assuming you are not a multiplayer guy then?

For people like me multiplayer is great and it does not effect the story so people complaining about it I really dont get it.

Also I want to add that multiplayer has been around wy before this gen.  Halo, Socom, Unreal Tournament, Counterstrike, Quake, and this list goes on.

Most great developers do this.

Bungie always have

343i do

Turn 10 do

Epic Games do.

Thats why certain franchises gets so many players 2 years down the line. Because they are amazing both single and multi.

I have nothing against multiplayer. Just that its frequently used as an excuse not to add REAL replay value.
