Forums - Gaming Discussion - What´s the outlook for JRPGs in the West for the (near) future?...still grim?

First of all, I´ve been out of the loop when it comes to JRPGs for a long time, so the "still grim?" is just an assumption based on the little I´ve seen and read on gaming sites, don´t know how correct it is.

So, I used to love JRPGs back in the days of the SNES and PS1 (Chrono Trigger, FFVI, FFVII and Xenogears my absolute favorites), but right after FFX (PS2, released in 2001) I drifted away from the genre completely, and ever since the 7th generation started, I found myself starting to really enjoy WRPGs..not only that, but for the first time ever, my library of games is made up, in its vast majority, of Western games.

Now, I got Lost Odyssey for the 360 a few months ago but still haven´t even touched it, plan to do so next month, and heard nothing but praise for Xenoblade.

Anyway, like I said in the first paragraph, I´ve been out of touch with anything related to JRPGs for a long time (except SquareEnix is still shit?), so for someone who doesn´t like handhelds and only plays on home consoles, have WRPGs completely taken over?...is there a really promising JRPG coming?

Promising JRPGs coming to consoles in my mind would be:
Ni no Kuni
Tales of Xillia
and lastly, Atelier Ayesha.

I'm pretty certain these will all be great in their own way. Admittedly three isn't an amazing number, but I'm fairly happy with it.

Thanks.

I´ve been planning to get back into the genre, so I guess I´ll start with Lost Odyssey, hope it´s a good choice to start.

You can try out the Ni no Kuni demo from PSN. The game releases 22 january.

It is gonna be probably the same way as last gen.

More jRPG presence in the portables - almost as equal presence on the consoles as last gen. No way in hell is it gonna be like in the past (PSX/PS2 era).

Unfortunate....

A promising jRPG that is coming but not officially confirmed for release is Bravery Default.

Other good looking RPGs are: Tales of Xillia and Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch.

I can´t help but remember the news about Skyrim selling over 10 million and thinking whether or not we´ve already passed the point of no return for JRPGs in the West (if so, how long ago was it?)

JRPGs have largely migrated to the handhelds. I think the turning point was when Dragon Quest 9 was announced for the DS back in 2006.

The good news is, JRPGs for the consoles still exist. Just a little while back, Xenoblade was released for the Wii, and got some of the best reviews in the history of the genre! And in 2013, we're getting Ni No Kuni, Monster Hunter 3U, Lightning Returns, and Tales of Xillia.

Love and tolerate.

It certainly feels like it. Ni No Kuni is only big one I see in near future.

In PS2 era I had to decide which JRPG Iwanted, now it is take what ever you can get.

On handhelds I have several JRPGs but always been a "sit down for 3-4 hours" minimum genre for me. Of course if Grandia 4 comes out on Vita I will buy that system in a heart beat.

We got some of the best games ever created this gen, of course im talking about Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. And they just announced Dark Souls 2 :D

Bet with gooch_destroyer, he wins if FFX and FFX-2 will be at $40 each for the vita. I win if it dont

The series I haven't yet tried is Persona. I have Persona 1 on my PS Vita, I just havent got round to it yet. I'm not sure if Dark Souls counts, but its imo the best RPG this generation.

Final Fantasy is the flagship the genre here in the west. If FF15 does not deliver then I think the genre is in some trouble.
