I doubt the 3DS will outsell the PS3. For the year, the 3DS has barely sold more than the PS3. The 3DS's second year sales are only slightly higher than the PS3's 6th year sales.

It's 1.2mil ahead this year WW with only 4 weeks left, so it would have to outsell the 3DS by over 300k a week, which I don't see. 

But my point was that the 3DS was only about 60k behind the LT sales number for the PS3 in Japan, so this week it should have passed it (what with the 3DS outselling it by over 100k each week this year nearly).

I'm taking about lifetime sales. I'm merely using this year's sales to illustrate the 3DS's low sales.

Okay, I thought you were talking about Worldwide sales.

That's cool; though 3DS sales aren't all that low. They could be higher, but you either compare it to the DS (which it was never going to reach) or the Vita (which is terrible). There's no real middle ground to compare it to.

Don't really care what console people choose to reference the 3DS's success or lack of success. People are always going to alter the reference consoles and even their definitions of success. And it's all going to be based on some arbitrary point to fit their agenda. Use whatever methods to measure success that you find appropriate.

I just thought you were saying the 3DS would pass the PS3 lifetime WW sales, which I disagreed with. But I see you were talking about Japan sales.

That sounds reasonable, in a hyperbolic way. I'll celebrate the release for Bioshock Vita then. Maybe Bioshock Vita will push the PSV over 10 million units sold.
