Nintendo of Europe blocks access to 18-rated content on the Wii U eShop at certain times of day, system messages suggest.

Users are unable to access trailers for 18-rated Wii U games or buy 18-related content.

The issue first came to light after a NeoGAF user experienced the issue and contacted Nintendo of Italy's customer support.

"Dear customer," a Nintendo representative replied, "we would like to let you know that Nintendo has always aimed to offer gameplay experiences suited to all age groups, observing carefully all the relevant regulations regarding content access that are present in the various European countries.

"We have thus decided to restrict the access to content which is unsuitable to minors (PEGI) to the 11pm - 3am time window."

Eurogamer has just tested this and it appears to be true. We were unable to access Assassin's Creed 3 information or buy ZombiU digitally.

"You cannot view this content," a message reads. "The times during which this content can be viewed have been restricted."

There messages appear for user accounts on which no parental controls have been set.

Eurogamer has contacted Nintendo for more information and will update when we hear back.

Well that is quite bad, you can't buy 18+ rated games from eshop before 23.00 or even view trailers. I bet a lot of working people will love this. Weren't those parental controls enough?

Do i understand this wrong?

If you actually go in and set your parental ratings instead of letting it be on default this problem is gone.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Looks like you're one of the few people who actually understands the situation.

There seems to be a pattern lately where things are misreported or misunderstood, causing outrage. Then the situation is clarified to be nowhere near as bad, and people go quiet until the cycle begins anew.%%3/p%30D %A%/td%bo

Nope, the parental controls have no effect on the E-Shop. This restriction goed with or without parental controls.

Did you set your age in your account settings? I don't have access to a WiiU to test the effects, but either way, this could still be a case of misreporting and overreaction.

WHERE IS MY KORORINPA 3

I hope to God this is just a quick fix for the short-term, otherwise this is the dumbest thing that NoE has ever done... From getting 2 RPG Wii titles before the americans to this??? Say it isn't so, ol'chaps! :(

And proud member of the Mega Mario Movement!

Stupid idea. Is this europe or only in italy as the guy contacted NOI?

Well I can confirm that this is true. Oh brother.
If this doesn't get patched by adding eShop to the parental controls settings then...I don't know what to say. I'm totally speechless.

Around the Network

Why is Nintendo trying to play cyber-parent?

Yeah, it's not like those kids have access to that content on the motherfucking INTERNET!!! or something.

Fuck censorship in general.

Why not restrict only the accounts of children seeing the trouble people had to go through to create account for their children.

This is the Game of Thrones

Where you either win

or you DIE

Very strange move by NOE.

Surely parental controls are enough.

That's quite weird. I just watched some porn on mine and its 8:00 in the morning.

Just in case anyone is curious, porn hub plays on the wii u's browser since it plays in html5.
