Wii was a miracle, I don't even remember how Nintendo managed to make so much buzz back when the thing launched. It's like everyone and their monkey was talking about it.

Relatively easy, the people thought it was a fun novelty gimmick and bought it to satisfy their urges to play games in a simple manner. The Wii U is trying to battle with the Xbox 360 and PS3 which are a different and more stable crowd. The Wii was a hot ticket mass market item that had massive casual appeal.

You speak as if all the Wii customers were idiots who only wanted easier gaming.

Never said that, I said they want simpler gameplay. Think of it like pop music, whats simpler works for everyone. The Wii made that available for all. Most aren't ready for twelve to sixteen button controller. You Nintendo fanatics ake offense when you only need two eyes and one brain between the two. Kinect did the same thing, but as far as living room multimedia that is probably the way most people will scroll for their media in the living room.

"They" sounds like everyone, that only applies to casuals, and don't say there aren't "complicated" games for the Wii.

The complex games were for the core on the Wii trying to perfect certain genres lke shooters and the other games went back to classic controls where you could use older controls (how many people actually used those though?). The Wii using a peripheral makes games simpler though simplifying thing to just movement. At best Mario Kart, Wii Sports, Wii Fit and their ilk were the ones played the most.

So you're saying games on the Wii were "easier" because of simplify movements? Controls don't make a hard game (they make it frustrating if those controls are bad), hard games come from the skill and challenge the game have, not their controls. Mario Kart would have had the same difficulty if it was played on a 360 controller or the DualShock.

The U is too core for the masses but too casual for the core
in Japan will do great, in america ok and in the EU mediocre
i expect it to sell around the 50m mark

So defensive. There are challenging games on the Wii, but yes I mentioned Mario kart because it was one of the highly bundled titles.

Why defensive? We're just having a debate. Mario Kart being a bundle game doesn't mean anything, it just means is a popular game with high demand.

Or both. I fail to see the mutual exclusivity here.

People need to be realistic about the magnitude of demand that the Wii enjoyed; it was an anomaly. WiiU (which is said to be shipping in greater numbers than the Wii) shouldn't be relegated to "low demand" yet just because a bunch of eBay/Amazon scalpers aren't profiting from it.

Going by that rationale, however: The Wii sold about 3m by the end of 2006 (2,954,781 by Dec 30, according to Vgchartz). Let's see what WiiU has sold by the end of 2012 before we declare that Nintendo may be in trouble.

I don`t think anyone expects Wii U to behave like the Wii, ever.
That being, if it was selling very well on Ebay i would be surprised. Wii U does not have that mass appeal that Wii had and led people - probably a lot of them were parents - to buy it no matter the price.

As someone already posted, it`s better to compare it to the rest of the consoles, which sounds more fair.
