Forums - Gaming - here's a conspiracy theory for you (Are the console makers killing off the consoles?)

No company intentionally kills off it's own business. If MS and Sony wanted to get out of the hardware business they would just do what Sega did. They wouldn't spell tons of money to blow up the market. If the next gen of consoles are all as underpowered as the Wii U it will just mean tech will slow down. It won't stop people from buying the next Halo.

Wasn't this the biggest gen in terms of consoles sold? Why would they say no to money? Interesting theory.

Game centric consoles WILL die... it's just a matter of time. Gaming will become a service part of any other services available on different devices...

People love gfx but gfx cost money. More money cost in making good gfx cut companies profit. Everyone loves profit specially companies and vgcharters. Cut in profit leads to less strong console and less strong gfx. People with high end video cards not so happy (prob around 20% of pc gamers at max). Companies make more money and make more games with jumping dudes and pew pew pew guns. More games make Michael and friends so happy.

Exactly so people will buy the next halo as long as it looks like halo 4 but is in 1080P!.

Plus they wont just kill it off cos they know this gen they can sell lots of under powered hardware at a profit!.

But its next gen when they will launch their live cloud gaming and soney network cloud gaming entertainment things to your pc set top boxes!

Cloud gaming won't work. Over half of america can hardly stream decent video let alone 60fps live gameplay.

Why do you think then game makers such as UBISoft and Epic games are saying longer console cyclces are bad for them??

Running out of ram and people are bored of their yearly franchises. They don't want to make new stuff with high gfx because new ip's cost too much money and cut into the CEO's compensation package.

Games are already costing more than $20 - $100 million dollars on HD consoles. Just to break even they need to sell 5 times more copies than they did in the last generation. Over 120 companies have shut down this generation trying to make the big graphical games we all wanted. Things would go even worse if the PS4/XBOX3 come with the horsepower of muscle cars. Graphics are important but they just cost too much.

Here is the number of people it takes to make games.

I think it has more to do with Dev cost. Why would sony make a console that supports graphics so good that dev cost would skyrocket killing any potential profit. I think the Wii taught everyone the simple fact that fun factor is what sells, while graphic can increase the fun factor immensely it is not the end all be all (another example, see WoW, graphic are going on 8 years old there)

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Simple question.

We hear the wiiu is not that much more powerful then the ps3 and 360

And i also think the PS4 and xbox8 wont be that much powerful too going by rumors. Pretty much i think the best you console owners will get is what us PC gamers have been playing for awhile now..

When the next gen consoles launch i think the console makers are going to make them weak on purpose. think about it Sony Ms Nintendo they all lose money on consoles (Well except for nintendo).

so the next gen console makers want to make weak systems so that most people that enjoy great gfx to go along with their games will go to pc to get that fix. On VGc alone this year we have a number of users who have already went from console to pc and i bet will now never go back!.

So pretty much we will have console makers releasing weak systems for the ones who dont care about gfx and the ones who do switching to PC to get their real next gen fix.

But the whole point of this is to make consoles die. We all know how much people love gfx. so the console or in this case PC with the best GFX is going to winn right???

Prisoner's dillema. Assuming that being the sole high powered console will enable you to get huge market share, it seems improbably they would collude like this. Unless you can think of some ways Sony or Microsoft can punish each other when one reneges, or maybe the game developers can punish the renegade (exclusives for the low graphic console. Although, again, you still have a prisoner's dillema situation, since game developers might want to get an leg up on the competition by partnering with the higher powered console).

They dont need it to work perfect. Lets say nextgen last 5 years from the time the last console launches.

we could be into 2017-18 by then you telling me most peoples internet connections wont be good enough to steam gaming by then i will tell you your wrong imo.

Also not all gaming will need to be steamed as you will still be able to buy your games and download them or buy them in a shop and install them. But you will only be able to play them using Sony, Ms or Nintendos service. Kinda like how steam and orgin and ubisofts stores kinda work atm on pc.

Trust me the console makers will make more from you if they can get you to sign up to their service,

Onlive gaiki etc was all just tests. The next consoles you will be playing will all come with an online service for steaming games in some form i bet you.

so in other words the next consoles will be a test bet to see how many signs up.

Console makers are going to kill the consoles as they are!. Its why they want to make them more and more like pc's so when it comes to people using Xbox pc type console or sonys pc type console (Really pc's with sonys or MS's name on it, or maybe MS will just become the OS developer for the nextgen consoles to stop Linuz from becoming the number 1 console PC type OS. people will be ok with that!.

Look how much slack MS got last gen for using PC parts in the xbox. "Its only a PC with a custom os etc etc" Why are the console makers getting no slack for doing this now?.

Ill tell you why cos people have accepted for consoles to use off the shelf custom parts instead of making all new parts now. Like nextgen they will except consoles pretty much being the same but running another OS and the gen after that they will accept the PC set top boxes from makers such as sony, Valve, Samsung etc etc.

You said that cloud gaming would replace powerfull console hardware. I'm saying that won't happen for a long LONG time. Not just a couple years. I'm talking about decades. Sure it's going to be a part of next gen just like it is a part of this gen, but half of America lives in locations with slow internet. It will require billions if not trillions of dollars, hundreds of thousands of workers, and many years to lay the cable needed to bring the kind of speed required for HD lag free streaming games.
