Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Long-term things Nintendo needs to do

I don't understand the need for a New Legend of Zelda, at least from a business perspective, given that that is what this is supposedly focused upon. The argument is clear and obvious with 2D vs 3D Mario (2D sells a boat load more).

With Zelda, the most commercially successful games are Ocarina and Twilight Princess. Thus, the same business argument doesn't hold up, and it just becomes a personal desire.

- Make a "New Legend of Zelda" like NSMB.

Nintendo actually already did that, in fact, it was 4 Swords that had us asking for something like that for Mario to begin with. Legend of Zelda: 4 Swords Adventures

I would love a NEW Zelda. Give it high end graphics, a big quest, lots of cool gadgets to use. It would be amazing. The precise control of 2D games simply can't be recreated in a 3D plane. Avoiding enemies, timing attacks, aiming...it is all so much more in the player's control in 2D. 3D makes you need things like z-locking or other computer aided enhancements. Also, 2D allows for real variety in weapons. Things like the boomerang, bow or slingshot could have real different uses and attack styles, unlike in 3D where you simply switch to first person and aim with all of them. Make it happen and take my money, Nintendo!

And that is the big one there. It would be cheaper and quicker to make than 3D Zelda and probably sell more. Especially since it has been so long, nostalga and market hunger would make the audience eat it up. Also, 2D is more accessible. You would potentially greatly expand your Zelda audience. The orignal Zelda was the most complex game to date... but anyone could pick it up and get into stabbing and shooting enemies right away.

Ther's nothing "New" about Four Swords Adventure in a way Super Mario Bros. on Nintendo DS was "New", nor gameplay, nor sales wise.

I said I would make a longer post, but you know what? Fuck that. Many of my opinions have already been expressed by Aielyn and Archbrix. This dude only wants Nintendo to do things he himself enjoys, and that's not good for Nintendo.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

What is the point of your reply? No one said a Zelda in this style would be nearly as commercially successful as 2D Mario. The "New" is simply just part of the title like "Super".

What mattered was that it was a throwback to an older style of play with up to 4-player co-op, just like NSMB.

Have you played it? It's nothing like old-style Zelda, hence "New" is not applicable to it the same way SMB DS is "New...".

I believe it is possible to make games that are both very popular/successful AND that are good games, instant classics, but it takes hard work and a lot of talent. Nintendo doesn't have any of that, so instead the question is how can they get money with what they do have.

What?  If Nintendo doesn't have it, then no one else is even close.

Pretty much.  Malstrom really wants nothing more than a return to '80s era video game design.

That's what I believe, yes.
