Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Miyamoto's words just genuinely made me sad (Regarding Paper Mario)

It all comes down to personal taste, really, so I'm not going to argue anything with you. All I will say is this: I loved the third chapter of TTYD (the stadium fighting one) and I don't remember any humorous parts of it. Yet the scenario and unfolding story were really, really awesome in my opinion. The character development, mystery, and climatic battles were really fun, but the gameplay itself was extremely bland (running around back and forth and doing normal battles repeatedly).

Mario riding around on the little Yoshi is pretty slapsticky. And I wouldn't call the stadium battles normal; as I recall, a lot of the later ones had caveats like, 'you can't jump,' or 'you can't use items.' Maybe some other things like having to nail a certain number of action commands. I don't remember exactly.

I am genuinely curious though about what part of Paper Mario's story you find so engaging if it isn't the humor. The tournament is a good example but it's still just one instance. How about, say, the Toy Box chapter of the N64 Paper Mario?

Honestly, I don't remember much from the original title outside of running away from ghosts and the final sequence. I do remember enjoying the Yoshi's Island part, though. I don't really remember a lot of humor from the first game.

TTYD:

Chapter 1: epic castle with a spooky tale of this monstrous dragon

Chapter 2: Hated it. Nothing fun here.

Chapter 3: Mysterious fight pit and cool unfolding events

Chapter 4: Cool mystery story again and it was a somewhat spooky tale, which thank god was intriguing because the gameplay in this part was literally "run to the castle! now run to the town! now run to the castle!" going through the same instances and fighting the same enemies over and over...

Chapter 5: Cool Pirate story and exploring the unknown caves. When you fought the pirate captain, he turned to your side, and then you had a HUGE epic battle against the Naut guys, that was so epic! I think that's one of my favorite story sequences.

Chapter 6: The mysterious events happening on the train. The penguin  was funny and I enjoyed his deductive humor. I loved the desolate atmosphere of exploring the train station in the middle of the chapter, and I loved the way the chapter ended with the last boss. It was rather creepy seeing everyone missing from the train right before the boss battle.

Chapter 7: One of the less interesting story areas, but finally finding the super computer guy was really cool. Speaking of which, I LOVED his story parts with peach. His character really developed and you could feel his emotions. The gameplay in these sections sucked, but I loved them regardless.

Chapter 8: Biggest turn of events in the story, you start to figure out more about the ancient town, and the final confrontation against the ghost sisters and the final boss is so awesome. I feel really heroic when the battle starts and (don't tell anyone I said this) I get chills when it plays that cheesy sequence of the Stars calling out to everyone to give mario support.

Not mentioned above: Seeing the port town evolve as the gameplay went on was really fun, as was exploring the ruins under the ground and figuring out more and more about them.

I'm sad too. I've decided I'm not buying this game. I just don't think it'll be fun. And to think I actually bought a 3DS for this. Thankfully, Fire Emblem is sure to be great.

Let this be a lesson to you all, never buy a system with only a promise of a game. FFvXIII fans know what I'm talking about T_T

I bet the Club Nintendo crowd rated Wii Fit's story higher than Super Paper Mario's.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

No they don't. They haven't had a chance to be disappointed.

If you're a vXIII fan, I didn't mean to offend. I'm one too, sadly.

The years of waiting, wondering, and general BS = the disappointment.

Myamoto is still one of the best developer in the world when it comes to techniqual quality of his games.

But statesments such as this one makes me think that he maybe should retire and that Nintendo could do better w/o him in today's age of gaming. He seems just way to much out of touch with today's gamers. He can't realise that gamers want story and are tired of the lame ass ''bowser kidnap peach'' all the time. Skyward Sword was the best Zelda IMO because of it's storytelling and as far as I know Myamoto did'nt do much, it was mostly Aonuma's work. I think he's the cause of the so few new IP and so many cliché games that comes from Nintendo. (blashphemy, I know! Can't believe myself I'm saying this)

You may think Skyward Sword was the best Zelda, but it's one of the weaker selling ones. I believe it's pulling in Majora numbers, which is...not great.

I was launched on a dead system that has been abandoned by core gamers years ago. It also required Wiimotion+, a peripheral that I personnaly know alot of ppl doesn't have. I'm a Nintendo fanboy and did'nt have Wiimotion+ so I bought it just for this game, I know alot of ppl who were like me but were not rdy to buy a m+ just to dust off their dead system for 1game. I don't blame the quality of the game for it's performance at all.

Also, 3.5milion is not bad not matter how you look at it. Yes alot of zelda games outsold it but still, 3.5mil is great considering the state of the Wii when that game launched.

Finaly, it did ousell MM (by only 100k), but I would'nt put quality as the cause of MM's sales either. I also blame the fact that it was launched on a dying system. So SS got the MM treatment (same thing for TP on the GC, barely sold anything), launching on a system that fewer and fewer ppl cared about and they both did'nt have enough time to let their legs have an effect. Thanks to it's legs, TP sold like crazy but SS actualy sold more than TP in it's first year, meaning that if SS had 6years ahead of it to sell, it would probably do great. Also if you give SS the Nintendo Select treatment that TP had...

If story includes the banter and dialogue of all the characters throughout the games, then gamers mustn't understand what makes Paper Mario so amazing. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts in the franchise as essentially most JRPGs have either a better story or gameplay than this series. Impede upon just one aspect and the game's flaws stand out like a sore thumb.
