Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Report: GameStop Cancelling Wii U Waiting List

Well I'm getting my Wii U today, which I "backordered" on gamestop's site when it became available on Sunday night. Anyone know if this is considered the second batch/wave of Wii Us, that will have the big ass 5gb update already installed?

It is beyond odd that people's testimonies about high Wii U availability happen to align perfectly with their console loyalties.

So the news from gamestop proves that Gamestop is loyal to Wii U?

To be honest. A fact is a fact, the Wii U sells good and gamestop has tons of pre-orders.

I don't buy this "extreme demand." If there was that much demand, there wouldn't be ~2.5K consoles on ebay, which are selling at a max of $50-60 profit. People would be buying them like crazy for possibly double, maybe triple, the original price. There also wouldn't have been stacks on Black Friday about as tall as the 360 and PS3 ones, where people were calmly taking systems off, instead of rushing and pushing to make sure they got the last ones.

Frankly, regarding the units on eBay and Amazon I think people are being reasonable and simply waiting for more stock to appear in stores at this point, particularly with the economy the way that it is; most people probably aren't willing to pay exceedingly high prices from scalpers on these sites.  We'll see how it is as Christmas draws nearer.

If there was crazy demand for it, they would. They've been doing it since the start of ebay, most notibly starting with the Tickle Me Elmo doll.  Not sure what people were paying on ebay for the Wii when it first sold out, but I'm sure it was for more than $299.  Heck, a PS3 at launch was sold for ~$9000 and some were getting violent with each other in lines waiting for it.  And really, come on, people didnt just all of a sudden wise up for the Wii U launch.

You should have seen what the $99 LeapPads were selling for last year on eBay. Made me wish I bought that for my daughter rather than the stupid V-tech that ended up breaking.

I think they were going for $200+ easy.

Also, the Nintendo Wii back at launch was selling on eBay for north of $400 each.

Finally, again, the economy is quite different today than it was six years ago.  While people are still willing to spend money for the holidays, you're not going to see the WiiU - or a newly released PS4/NeXtBox - hitting remotely close to $9000...

This is so true. When I visited America during the holidays in 2006, everyone was crazy spending (even the people I was staying with).

When I visited them again in 2008 (this was before the crash), all they could talk about is how they don't know if they will have a job, how fuel is expensive, how this is expensive. I perosnally found it amusing as petrol comapred to Australia was DAMN cheap still. They were so worried about their financial situation that they would not even spend $5 on a pack of 24 coke cans t walmart. To me that was like a no brainer don't think twice as 24 pack of coke in Australia was about $30 at the time.

I guess the point I am making, if there were signs back in 2008 of people starting to worry, I can only imagine what 2012 is like in the USA.

What makes you think Amazon doesn't sell the Wii U?

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=wii+u

As for the Vita and PS3, I was doing that because LeoJ is one of the biggest Sony fanboys around ... He can't claim that the Wii U is doing poorly without also admitting that the PS3 was doing abysmally when it launched, or that the PS-Vita was comparitively DOA

I'm not trying to be argumentative here, but Amazon doesn't sell the Wii U.  They've never had it in-stock.  They also do not sell the Wii or the 3DS.  Those are all third-party sellers.  This is a known issue between Amazon and Nintendo.  Rumor is that Amazon isn't happy with Nintendo over profit margins, though there are also rumors that it had something to do with how Nintendo responded to the large amount of returns on the 3DS.

"Gamers who prefer to do their shopping online will be hitting a snag when it comes to Nintendo's next home console, the Wii U. The launch date and price of the system were revealed yesterday, and stores like GameStop and Best Buy are already taking pre-orders for the system.

Amazon however, is not. People have emailed Amazon and signed up to notified when the system will be available from the online store, but shouldn't expect to hear back anytime soon. Amazon sent out massive emails for people who were interested in the console with the new.

"Thank for you signing up to be notified when the Wii U is available. Unfortunately the Wii U console is not available at Amazon.com at this time but please check back in the future, as availability may change," read the email.

A while back Amazon stopped carrying the Nintendo 3DS, and didn't stock the 3DS XL unit either. As the email reads, people will only be notified when the system is available, but can't actually pre-order it from the service.

Amazon and Nintendo have been mum as to why the companies aren't working together anymore. Of course you can still buy Nintendo items from Amazon sellers, but Amazon themselves aren't stocking current or future Nintendo products."  http://www.examiner.com/article/the-nintendo-wii-u-will-not-be-available-for-purchase-through-amazon

As for the last part, yeah, I can't fault you much there after reading his comment.  Your post was so long that I didn't realize it was a response, it just felt like a random shot.

Well that's actually part of the economy going down. People don't buy anything until Black Friday because it's extremely cheap. Before people would buy electronics anytime of year but now most people prefer to wait for Black Friday.

People buy things all the time here in the US whether it be holiday season, tax return season or the big electronic sales for 4th of July...

All year round people here in the US buy $500+ iPads, $200+ smartphones and spend $100+/month on phone plans. No idea where you get this idea that the country gets stingy for 11 months out of the year.

People don't have money because they waste it all on the things I just mentioned. That and feeling the need to drive these stupidly gigantic gas guzzling SUVs and then complain about gas costing too much.

Of course not all people wait for Black Friday, but part of the economy crash and this new records every year is do to some people waiting. Hell I would wait a couple of months for Black Friday before buying a TV, because is way cheaper than the normal price.

People have less money, that means they can't buy electronics until those prices are extremely cheap.

Ever went to a Black Friday and tried to get that heavily discounted TV? I think this year was a 50" Emerson HDTV for $300. It was gone within seconds.

Way too crazy for my liking, lol! I did it once and that was in 2006 when I got my Wii. Not only did I have to rush to get that damn thing when the doors opened, but I also had to camp out for 11 hours in the freezing cold.

i can only speak for myself but

1 - 32 Gb is a joke.   really bad joke at that.  i'd get a minimum of 500 Gb external so 32 vs. 8 is the difference between terrible and really terrible.

2 - not my bag, don't want it at any price.

3 - meh.  i'm indifferent personally.

4 - i can get that but there aren't that many games on e-shop yet.  how much would you save if you bought the entire catalog of games?

I wasn't saying that those were good reasons for you, just good reasons for other people.

1 - I never said that 32GB were a good amount, but it is better than  8GB

2 and 3 are here just to remember that both are reasons for someone to choose, i know you are not one of them, but there are A LOT of people that would care about those reasons

4 - This goes until december 2014, not 2012. seriously you don't think this is a good deal!!!?

You asked the difference and i gave you 4, it doesn't matter if you don't care to them

and i started by saying "i can only speak for myself".  but honestly, anyone who doesn't particularly want nintendoland i think the basic is still the better deal financially speaking.  i guess i'm just surprised at how much more desirable the delux seems to be.   a 50% attach rate would be ridiculous for most games so i'm surpised half the consumers wouldn't just prefer the basic as I would.

I think it's because that extra $50 gets you a game you could sell off if you so wish, plus you get 4x the storage as well as a discount on everything purchased from the Nintendo Online Store.

I think it's 20% or something for the next year or two.
