Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii to WiiU transfer

Just asking what kind  process is this transfer.

I have games on SD card and Wii memory. Do all games transfer, or do i have to move between them?

And does my download record remain on Wii shop channel?

Thanks for answering

I found this on youtube. I hope it hepls

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on:

+Console : Wii U, Xbox360

+PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz, HD5850 1Gb

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm more a single player gamer.

Did the transfer this morning. All of the content on the Wii transfers except for a few channels like Check Mii Out, the Photo Channel, the News Channel, Weather Channel, and more. Also, the game Lost Winds doesn't transfer over. All of your saves etc. get ported over too as well as your purchase history.

Unfortunately, anything on your SD card aside from game saves are pretty much useless. Any games you have on there will have to be re-downloaded.

Thing is, the original Wii is now in my daughter's room. She was playing Animal Crossing. Now, the save that was on her Wii is now on the Wii U and it's one of those games that won't let you copy. Either she's going to have to play in the game room or she's going to learn to hate me.

No sign of many channels like The Nintendo Channel, either. I guess my play history is no more. Going to have to do a bit more research.

The best way to get around a situation like with d21lewis's daughter is to jailbreak your console, do a backup of the NAND to sd card, do the wii u transfer, then restore the backup you made to the original Wii console. You get to keep all your saves on both machines. VC and downloaded games work on both provided you don't go on to the Wii Shop channel on the original Wii. If you do, none of them will work on the original wii.  Doesn't effect WiiU functionality.

Good video but not sure why they put the transfer tool on the SD card...

It was a very simple process.
1) Put SD card (can be full of other crap, just needs 512MB free space) in WiiU
2) Go to Wii channel on WiiU and install transfer tool.
3) Run transfer tool to prep SD card.
4) Turn on Wii and put SD in Wii.
5) Install transfer tool on Wii.
6) Run transfer tool on Wii to copy all game saves, channels, and other data to SD card.
7) Put SD card back into WiiU
8) Continue transfer tool process to load all game saves, channels, and other data onto WiiU.
9) Re-Download various games not copied over because you had them on SD card already or simply not installed.

A) So this won't copy every channel, only those usable by WiiU.
B) This won't allow you to use games on SD card that were working on original Wii. You will have to wipe that SD card and re-download those games.
C) The WiiU forces a 512MB limit on Wii channel storage, so yes, you'll still have to use an SD card. (to me this was stupid and the only part I think Nintendo F'd up on)
D) Old Wii will now be a blank slate and will not be able to use or re-download any old games and such. You can now safely reformat the Wii memory to return it to factory settings if needed. (If you do this, make sure you remove your WiiShop settings first including Club Nintendo linkage)

C) The WiiU forces a 512MB limit on Wii channel storage, so yes, you'll still have to use an SD card. (to me this was stupid and the only part I think Nintendo F'd up on)

I hate this part especially since all my games were on my sd card in the first place. I have to delete them and redownload all my games back to the sd card. Just really annoying. I wonder why the original lost winds won't transfer over. I mind since its one of the few wiiware titles I own.

Yep same here. It was very annoying. But now I put all my VC content on the WiiU and only the larger WW content on SD card. At least the re-download process was sort of easy as there is an easy alphabetical list of what you've bought.

I never bought LW, but it must be some issue with licensing or hacking.

There's a homebrew app that lets you copy saves even though they're copy protected. It has no side effects, or anything to worry about. The Wii doesn't ask questions when copy INTO the console either.

Speaking of which, there's a site called wiisave.com where you can download people's 100% save files if you want. This doesn't require any homebrew to use, just copy onto SD card, then SD --> Wii.

Thanks, man.  Will look into it.  I don't want to face her wrath!
