Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nielson says Nintendo am not doomed. But entire video game industry is.

Thanks for these great charts, Chandler.

I worry the results might not be wholly accurate, though, only because the Nielsen methodology is flawed. Although it has gotten better. In any event, I think the argument that the video game industry is doomed is way off. Video games have never been bigger or more commonly accepted as a mainstream medium.

I was also thinking about how accurate the charts could be.

For example, in the kids between 6 and 12 years chart the Wii appears with a 20%. With WiiU being out how could it be so high? And an e-reader has a 21%. Since when do kids prefer books to videogames?

And in the 13+ chart the e-reader has a 13%, more than PS3 (8%), Xbox360 (7%), and Wii (6%).

Oh, well. At least computers are not doomed. Although I wonder how many of them are MacBooks -.-

I wonder what it says about the worth of this survey that iPhone is wanted by more of these kids than Android, yet Android outsells iPhone.

As someone already pointed out, one thing is what kids want and another one is what parents want to/can buy Santa Claus thinks you deserve.

Last time I checked. 13 yr olds dont buy anything. Their parents do. I hope the parents have more sense than their kids, please dont buy them apple and nintendo products.

Where do they do these surveys? Wii U advertisements barely started, I don't see how kids could know about it so quickly. Or maybe I'm wrong? Maybe kids these days hang out on gaming websites...

What are you talking about, the ads are everywhere.

Not surprising but what children want, what they get, and what they use are three very different things ...

Beyond that, people buying iPads, iPhones, and iPods only is a threat to gaming consoles and dedicated gaming handheld devices if the purchase of an iDevice prevents the purchase of a dedicated gaming device.  I have seen no evidence for this, in fact I see evidence of the opposite happening:

not bad for Ninty I thought worst

The 3DS and Vita are going to do worse than the DS and the PSP. Western bloggers have finally joined the Japanese in discovering that you can play games on your phone. Ergo, ipso facto, and lorem ipsem, handhelds are doomed.

It looks like appealing to the kids is a good strategy. By looking at the numbers it's quite clear that adults are way less interested in buying cool stuff.

I guess buying weird things at IKEA and watching Jersey Shore is enough for them to be happy. *shudders*

Hey now, don't tar everyone with the same brush, I buy weird things at IKEA, but I don't watch Jersey Whore!!!
