Forums - Gaming Discussion - How long until good games are released?

Ive been reading alot about the console war recently and im sure we've all seen about ps3 not having any good game and xbox360 has so many more etc..

So i decided to find out how long after launch date these "great" games came out.

Assuming 360 launch date was Nov 05

Top 10 games(according to gamespot):

Gears of war --- Released 12 Months after 360

Oblivion --- Released 4 Months after 360

Ghost recon advanced war figther--- Released 6 Months after 360

Rainbow Six Vegas --- Released 12 months after 360

Perfect Dark Zero --- Released 1 month after 360

Guitar Hero 2 --- Released 16 months after 360

COD 3 --- Released 12 months after 360

Burnout Revenge ---Released 12 months after 360

Dead of Alive 4 --- Released 2 months after 360

Project Gotham Racing --- Released 1 month after 360

Looking at that list on 2 of the top only 4 games were released within the first 6 months, most not until after a year

This isnt meant to be a bash at the 360, its a great console

Just i dont see why people are expecting ps3 or Wii to have games as good as the 360 after the first 6 months. The 360 took a year to get these top games out :)

So after reading this would you agree? How long until great games usually come out for a console? Is the best yet to come for both?

EDIT: corrected my mistakes :P

Around the Network

Just a slight correction:  Oblivion was released on the 360 in May 2006, so it was 6 months after release.  Still, I think the point is well made.  I think the developers are catching up on the PS3 dev kits.  A lot of 360 games, including Oblivion, have been ported to the PS3 and a lot of future releases have been announced to also be on the PS3.

I think Resistance was better than Perfect Dark Zero, Motorstorm stands up to Project Gotham racing, so those 2 games are already equaled (motorstorm being 4 months instead of 1 after release).  We'll see how the lineups stack up after a year to 15 months.  I think the PS3 lineup in its first year will be better than the 360 lineup in its first year, and multi-platform games will help it keep up with the 360 games this year.

As for the Wii, Strikers comes out next month, but the Wii already has Zelda, Wario, and PaperMario.  The Wii lineup is more unique because it is lacking GTA, Halo, Lair, etc but it has all the Nintendo games to make up for it.  I think the Wii's lineup will show to be a lot better than the 360's first year as well.  It's already ahead of schedule despite the slim pickings for great games so far.

Also, DOA 4 was released in December 05 / January 06, so only 2 Months after 360 launch.

If you make a post like this one, at least check that you have the correct dates.

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter was released in March 2006, 4 months after. I think you're thinking of the sequel that just came out.

And what about Dead Rising? It was nine months after release.

Unless your using numbers from a Pal region country(which would still seem odd), a lot of these dates are off.

But as for your point, yes, the great games tend to come out later. That's why it was so smart for Microsoft to release their console a year before Sony. Because if youre going to chose between the two, most people would want the cheaper console that already has great games out.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Generally speaking, it takes a console around a year to get the first batch of good games.  It then takes another year after that, to get the significantly better games.  Normally, games tend to get better as a whole years after the console has been released.

I reckon we'll see the first wave of good games to hit the PS3 later this year...from August through to the end of the year.  Between the summer and winter of 2008, this is when we'll start seeing the games on the PS3, that we're supposed to be seeing.

Certainly 80% is a pretty arbitrary number, but it still demonstrates that there are a lot of good games available on the XBox 360 at any point in time

Very valid point.  As I was saying it takes a console/handheld a good few years to get in it's stride and I think Microsoft is ahead of the game in this one.  The 360 will be seeing 2nd and 3rd generation titles this fall from the "big" companies.  If GOW was last years hit...wait until Mass Effect and other big games hit this Xmas.  I think it will be at least a year from now, maybe 2, before we see PS3 games looking better than the 360 games.  So this gives MS a good amount of time to keep notching up the sales etc.

Corrected my mistakes sorry, posted in a hurry and got some dates wrong, fixed now (i hope)

And Yes it is a good point about 360 being released first, thier 2nd generation of games are competing against other consoles 1st gen.

And Happysqurriel, im not saying the 360 had bad games at any point, just alot of people seem to be comparing the most recent games against other consoles current ones, my point was that alot of 360 better games cam out a while after its launch

The PS2 list was included to show that a lot of those 360 games were also on the PS2. Some, like Madden, lacked the features that the PS2 (and Xbox1) had. Others, like King Kong, barely looked better. You can get those games to play for your PS3 as well.

5 of the 360's 2007 list are either already on the PS3 (or PS2 Guitar Hero) or will be soon (Advanced Warfighter 2). That leaves Crackdown and Shivering Isles. I hope Shivering Isles will make its way to the PS3, it's on the PC and 360 and Oblivion was just released on PS3.

Anyway, that leaves just 2 for 2007 on the 360, and 2 for the PS3 (Motorstorm and VF5). I'll also concede that Lost Planet is 79.9% on the 360, and that's close. There are others close for the PS3 to 80% as well, though. I could also count God of War 2...eh.

Including the PS2 games (and again, this is honestly fair for a lot of those) shows that the 360 still has little to distinguish itself from the PS3 despite the year head start.
