Adinnieken said: I seem to recall a time, after Microsoft had trouble communicating it's backward compatibility plans for the Xbox 360, when Sony gamers were touting the fact that the PS3 had full backward compatibility and how great of a feature it was. Then Sony dropped the feature and backward compatibility became an unnecessary expense that no one in their right mind needed. Funny thing is now that it's an expensive thing to achieve, Sony is the only one who doesn't offer it. Either on current models or rumored to be on future models. |
The problem was Sony was doing FULL BC for the original PS3s, something neither of the other consoles offered. MS on had Xbox games to worry about, yet many of those didn't work, or in further updates would stop working. Unfortunately the PS3's strong BC was due to the emotion engine(PS2) actually being put into it, which was a sizable added cost for the system when everyone was screaming for it to be cheaper. Sony then released a lesser, software emulation model that offered weaker BC for PS2. Then when price needed to go down further they formulated the plan to put some of the most popular titles on PS2 on PSstore or in HD collections. This suited them better cuz then they could make more profit from gamer's desire to still play PS2 stuff. If the demand for lower price wasn't so rabid, PS3 would still have hardware/software emulation.
Going forward Sony most likely will stick to only being BC fully if you have it digitally. They currently have many PS3 titles ready and available for download for this. It makes little since at this point to retain trying to be able to play CDs,DVD,BluRay PS games all at the same time.
Also keep in mind, PS3 only ever loss PS2 compatibility, not PS1 games which you can still to this day pop in ur PS3 and play. I would rebuy my entire PS1/2 game collection for Higher Res graphics and Trophies :)
Greatness Awaits
