So I was thinking of getting the $20 official one, but it looks like it could take any typical headset. Including ones from cell phones. Have any of you tried various other headsets?

Does the Wii U support Wii headsets? If so, find out which one of those is considered the best and pick it up.
Otherwise, go with a brand you know to be reliable. (I've always loved sennheiser, myself. I've been using their headsets for PC gaming for years and I've always been extremely happy.)

What do you mean, "register"?
From the other thread and looking at how it connects... via headphone/set jack... I think it really is just a universal system that can take anything.
