It's a bit odd that a series so critically acclaimed as the Infamous series has not sold up to the same standard of the games. I realize that quality doesn't equal sales, but I thought Sony actually did a good job with marketing Infamous 1/2 to the mainstream.
The first game is at 2.3 million, while the superior second game is just at a little above 1 million.
While games such as prototype outsell it. A little odd.
Thoughts?

The same reason why certain Nintendo games don't sell the way others do AND the same way certain Microsoft games don't sell the way others do
these different types of games don't all appeal to to the same people

A lot of it has to do with the market. Sony has a lot of games that are just not popular to the mass market because of how it is played or looks. InFamous is a good/average game but beyond that it isn't something that is going to be great or amazing. Sony had plenty of games this generation to have a chance of hitting the mass market and only one succeeded which would be the Uncharted series. Why is because of how good of a job they did. Casuals and hardcore players can pick up this game whether you like story/cinimatics or gameplay/shooting. Get rid of your opinion about InFamous. Can you see someone who doesn't play games that much playing it? That is the question. Remember your opinion is only just that.

Because the worlds and characters appeal to a smaller market.
Also, I'm guessing (though I never played it, but it's what it seems like) a game like Infamous doesn't have the real-life culture and undertones that games like Assassin's Creed, Red Dead Redemption, GTA, Modern Warfare or L.A.Noire have. Just my guess.
When will I get the best of this place...

To be honest, I never thought inFAMOUS was anything special in it's genre. There's plenty of other superior action-adventure games out there: Batman, Uncharted, God of War, etc. These games all tend to sell well. The game does have potential, but I thought it was repetitiveand boring (not as bad as Assassin's Creed though). I can only assume most people felt the same as I did. Great games (while also appealing) tend to sell well, from what I've seen.

I lost a bet to superchunk. He correctly predicted that PS4 will release within 2013. I should have known that superchunk was an excellent predictor, I was foolish to bet against him.

metacritics at 85 and 83 isn't really that critically acclaimed. There are a lot of series like it that also don't sell 5+ million.

The sales are good, and Infamous 1 sold the same as Prototype all versions combined. Prototype 2 is behind inFamous 2 all versions combined. Can't expect every game to sell 3m+

First off, I don't think 1.28M retail is a bad number for an exclusive. It's not fantastic or anywhere near the upper echelon, but it's not bad.
Second, it's going to get harder and harder to compare sales of newer games to those of older games. InFamous 2 was released as a day one digital title, if I'm not mistaken, and was also used to leverage PS+ as a free game. Now it's in a collected release format. What if none of those things had happened and it was simply sold in the standard format like the old days? I think the actual retail sales number would be quite a bit higher.
With the rise of digital distribution, only the publisher can really say how successful a game is in relation to older entries in the series.
