If activision is smart it will try to go the final fantasy style and reinvent itself with each installment. Call of Duty is not just a game anymore, its a standard. The controls, 60 fps, prestige are all part of the call of duty experience and those must stay. The setting, the story, and the characters is what must change. They cant go with modern warfare 4,5,6 or black ops 3,4,5. The problem is that the call of duty games borrow heavily from real world events in the past 60 years. They have tapped most of the popular times in recent military history.

Not much left to cover unless they get rid off the connections to real world events, and free themselves to make the game they want. Black ops II is start in that direction i guess, but i fear that activision will associate the Black Ops name too much with success and ignore that what made this call of duty game so special was the vast difference from part COD games.

As long as the fanboys are brainwashed and a new CoD comes out every year, this series will never die. OMG we need to end this now!

nope none of those games had a addictive competitive online component the majority of people buy COD for the online not the campaign

i think next gen it will be just as big b/c we will also have a new engine, but the first few irritations wont see the numbers of BO MW3 BO2 simply b/c the user base wont be as big on next gen HW

i think there all amazing games and deserve every sale they ge,t BO is my fav FPS campaign ever and i like MW3s spec ops, unlike other games they continue to evolve and add new features and modes

Nope. Call of Duty is more than just popular, its a cultural phenomenon.
It will probably decline next-gen, but for it to "die" it would next extremely strong competition. EA has proven its NOT capable of providing that with yearly releases. If EA can't do it, no one can.

BF3 was a big hit but it did not reach into the mainstream like COD does...

It was pretty much for hardcore gamers...

Also COD and BF can co-exisit...

I swear I know a lot of people that never buy any games new and buy only COD new every year...

I think thats me as well... I usually buy everything else used.
According to some people on this board I am the next Anti Christ...

However imo few games are worth 60 bucks...

I think a next Gen COD would do better... The next big change in COD has to be a graphics upgrade...

It's consistently good, well supported, has no BS online pass or week 2 DLC crap, and comes stuffed with more content than virtually all of its competition. Unless that changes, it will remain extremely popular.

Unlike most of those genres listed in the OP (music, skateboarding, sim racing, platformers, RPG) gamers will never tire of the FPS franchise.

Yeah BO2 has a ton of features and its solid on both fronts.
Great SP and MP and ZOMBIES!!!!!

The Single Player Campaign is already well above most other FPS games by a mile this year alone.

Then you have MP and then you have zombies and a zombie campaign...

People say COD=Crap ...

My response is 90% is then much worse then crap then...

It's not going to fail but I don't know if it'll remain on top. Every gen, there's a different top-selling franchise, on non-Nintendo consoles at least. It'll be interesting to see what new games become massive next gen.

Final Fantasy is OK, Final Fantasy XIV new update for the game is coming out.
