Japanese developers should really start using Kickstarter, I'd personally fund all their projects.

:'( Cost of development this generation is easily over $1,000,000 which is so much more than any kickstarter fund, ever.
I don't know how much money I need to throw at Japanese developers to get a steady stream of RPGs stateside... I love RPGs, sigh..

that isn't true, most of the cost goes for publishing and marketing, Kickstarter is basically giving money directly to the developers and you get the game afterwards , no publishing shares and no marketing crap, and also No "Budget Slicing" the money you give, goes fully to the developers.

this is a great thing for gaming as a whole, and japanese developers should take the chance, screw publishers and their "make a game that appeal to people or you're fired!" or the "Make the game and we'll publish it, but we aint giving you money till it is a hit" and their other bullshit politics.

Anyone remember that Orphen game that someone made for PS2?

Scion of Sorcery?  Yep.  That and SSX were the first two games I bought for my PS2.  I do remember it being a bit rough (as many early games on systems tend to be).

The best rpgs are on PS1 and PS2 consoles, Shadow Hearts and Xenosaga anyone?

I wouldn't call Xenosaga lost so much as complete. The creator and development team are still around and fully operational - their last game was Xenoblade, which came out last year. Right now it is assumed they are working on an RPG for the Wii U. It will be interesting to see what they come up with, HOPEFULLY it is in the same universe as Xenosaga and Xenogears, and have a similar type of story.

I can be wrong but doesn't Square own Xenogears?

Yep, and Namco owns Xenosaga, but the mind and the dev team behind the universe which spans both series are intact and work for Nintendo. Nintendo could very easily work with one or both Square and Namco and create a new game in the series, officially, or they could work on their own and make a game in the series unofficially. It could be Xeno-anything. I would personally love to see that story developed and continued, and perhaps have Gameplay which more resembles Xenoblade.

All JRPGs listed. A genre that typically has high uses of what is now archaic gameplay. Coincidence?

It can be hardly considered Archaic gameplay, otherwise one could argue that almost every genre nowadays also is composed of vastly over-used and archaic methods. There isn't a single genre that has trully evolved over the years, JRPGs aren't the sole exception.

Now, if you say that most JRPGs have failed to streamline or adapt to modern standards or audiences, then I'll give you that.

Ah, a thread about losdt RPGs. I entered in much hope. But reading it - where is the mention of Might&Magic, where is Wizardry and most missed of all: Baldur's Gate? Don't get me wrong, the mentioned franchises are good, but the three I mentioned are classical RPGs that defined the genre and are now lost. I felt kinda cheated.
Anyways, bringing back the memory of great RPGs is a honorable task. It should include the three (or at least Baldur's Gate).

I would add Ultima and King's Quest to that list as well, since those two series also launched or improved upon some of the pillars of modern day RPGs as well.

At least Baldur's Gate is getting a re-release treatment which will probably sate the long held appetite for the series XD.

Yes, how could I forget Ultima. Thanks for the reminder.

You're going to have to explain yourself a little better than that.
