Forums - Nintendo Discussion - 3DS & Japanese devs, a key to Nintendo's 3rd party support for WiiU.

The 3DS has been seeing the favor of some top japanese names in the industry and their games. Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest, Resident Evil.

With the monstrous success the platform has been enjoying in japan, and the obstinate dominance of its competition, Nintendo is seeing historical potential for support of its 3DS in the Japanese market for the current  generation. This support would lead one to believe that some of the most prestigiousjapanese  games may have their leading efforts created exclusively for the 3DS. In mind, I have IPs such as Final Fantasy, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid and other legendary j-games of our industry.

Now Nintendo has always struggled to get support from these legendary games after the SNES, due to stigmas birthed out of 101 reasons (take your pic). However, it seems that if the trends continue, Nintendo may be able to shake off that stigma with the leading japanese platform, its 3DS.

Developers have a tendency to flock to the leading manufacturer in support for consoles. It was the case for the Playstation brand for its two dominant gens, and was residually the case during this gen. However, with Nintendo's latest ressurgence to the top of the pyramid, developers are begining to show Nintendo more confidence on the 3DS. As a manufacturer, this is a good sentiment leading towards the launch of its home console.

In a likely scenario where this sentiment translates to the WiiU, leading to j-dev support for the upcoming home console, it could possibly be the case that, with j-games exclusive to the Nintendo home console growing in quantity, that the top-tier games of that trend would make their way to western shores. If that is true, already one key in attracting core 3rd party support accross the board is secured.

If top j-games see U exclusivity, the ant-like behavior of developers will lead western devs to see a market for their top games on the Wii U.

Is this possible? There are other key factors for 3rd party support for the U, but is this not certainly one of those?

The big thing I see Nintendo doing is really going hands on with developers. They're publishing Bayonetta. They're publishing Lego City Stories. Publishing Ninja Gaiden 3. Putting Mario characters in Scribblenauts, Mario costumes in Tekken. Putting Rayman Legends on all their Wii U displays, allowing Ubisoft tons of stage time at their conference, packaging Zombi U/Monster Hunter with the Wii U.

Nintendo seems to be taking a more aggressive stance with getting third party support, even going so far as to take the risk of publishing. We'll see if this pays off.

I think the wiiu will do wellwith third party games.

VITA 32 GIG CARD.250 GIG SLIM & 160 GIG PHAT PS3

I think history is repeating itself. Nintendo dominated with DS and Wii and it seems Nintendo is about to do the same with the 3DS and Wii U. With better online support, HD graphics and amazing 3rd party support! What's not to like ;)

Nintendo hasn't bought out Japan yet. Disgaea is still not coming out on 3DS or WiiU.

It'svery nice to see Japanese developers really starting to support 3DS and Wii U... Will inevitably make both systems popular next gen/this gen in Japan.

The issue really is replicating that same support with Western developers, Ubisoft is a start, but they've always been supporting Nintendo. When Nintendo gets solid support from companies like Bethesda .. That's when I'll be happy.

lol thats what I have argued. Nintendo will completely dominate japan next gen. I think they are doing the right thing. Japanese support is usually always solid on nintendo systems so scooping that market before the others get here ensures you get the best of japan. And it provides a backup in case some western developers do decide to bail on it. The problem is localization. Hopefully a lot of obvious jrpgs will come.

One more thing to complete my year = senran kagura localization =D

I'm not actually seeing a lot of support for the Wii U from Japanese third parties.

There's a port of MH3G, but the 3DS is getting MH4 in a few months.

DQX is alright, but it's a paid MMORPG, which means it won't have anywhere near the same impact of a 3-4 million selling regular Dragon Quest game.

And some ports of old PS3 content.

Japanese devs need to get further in gear with the Wii U. Maybe they're sitting on some announcements, but there better be a lot more support than this.

Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes should be on Wii U. Final Fantasy should return to Wii U. Dragon Quest VIII Remake should be on Wii U. The RE Revelations team should be put on a Wii U exclusive Resident Evil game, one that isn't an on-rails shooter. Phantasy Star Online should be on Wii U too.

The WiiU also isn't out in Japan for another week, and the initial launch games should suffice for a few months whilst the 3DS destroys it.

And the WiiU will never be as big as the 3DS in Japan.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I'm just glad I bought a 3DS, j-devs >>>>> w-devs for me.

It's possible, but in my opinion unlikely, that all this 3DS attention is going to lead to WiiU getting some.
