Forums - Sony Discussion - Does sony have a franchise that will sell the PS4 out of the gate

God of war, gt, uncharted and a huge list of smaller ip's that together make a healthy well-rounded library.

They should be fine.

Gran Turismo is a 10 million seller. Uncharted is a 6 million seller. God of War is a 5 million seller. LittleBigPlanet is a 3-5 million seller(not really sure). Then they have plenty of medium franchises like Killzone and inFAMOUS that sell 2-3 million. There's also new Ips and the fact that developers like ND are splitting up into multiple development studios.

Sony actually had an impressive batch of exclusives who could have been used for the PS3. The problem is many of them were released much too late. As well as excessive pricing, etc.

As for Halo and Gears. Halo isn't that much bigger than Gran Turismo. And Gears isn't that much bigger than Uncharted.

You see what most people tend to forget is that all the people that want the Halo games or Gears games already have an Xbox. Microsoft (in my opinion) doesn't take very many risks in terms of trying to create new IP's and this will eventually hurt them because someone who is really hyped for Halo 4 most likely has purchased previous halo's and doesn't need to buy another Xbox. When this FPS craze dies down it will hurt them because if you don't include Halo and Gears, the only other exclusive I can think of is Alan Wake and Forza. Not including Fable because the recent Fable game destroyed the franchise. The large variety in first party publishers that Sony has is really a huge advantage because they have the ability to not only create sequels/prequels to exisiting IP's but they also have the ability to make new IP's that will attract more people to the PS4.

I don't know what first party games are better, that's purely subjective. But as far as franchises that are bigger, based on the number of people that buy the product over this past generation, clearly Halo is bigger than anything on Playstation including GT, and Halo is literally 1/3 of the draw of games like Mario Kart and NSMB. So does Sony have a franchise that will sell its system? It has games that people will buy the system to play, but less so than XBox and much less so than Nintendo. 1st party software is a major dissadvantage for Sony.

I disagree with you completely.  I went with the PS3 this generation mostly because of SCE Worldwide Studios.  They produce a wide variety of games across many different genres rather than depending on the "shooter" demographic, which is why the PS3 has more global appeal.  The Xbox brand lives because of Halo and the fact that it gives them the edge in North America; even their second biggest exclusive isn't even their IP.  What if Epic took Gears multi-platform next gen?

Sony has a weakness in that they don't have a huge system-selling shooter that would allow them to challenge Halo in the western market, that's true without doubt.  However, Microsoft also has a weakness in that they depend heavily on a few IPs and lack exclusives in genres that perform well in other markets.  I don't really see a pronounced disadvantage either way and the sales numbers pretty much confirm that.  Both brands are successful at generating sales.

Media Molecules next console game may or may not be a big seller too. I imagine they will be ready to release something close to launch.

You will then have your mid-range games. inFamous, Killzone, Ratchet.

Whats good about Sony is they dont rely on ONE franchise. They have the huge 10m seller - Gran Turismo. They have the big 4 Million sellers - GoW/Uncharted. They then have the flurry of smaller, consistant 1-3 Million sellers.

The comments that are making the most sense is the ones saying they don't rely on one franchise. What I'm asking and I should have probably include this is does Sony have a franchise that will sell it out of the gate?

You should see the midnight launch parties for GT5 in Europe. Probably bigger attraction than CoD. Also Fifa will help a lot. Even though it's multiplatform, it always sells much more on a Sony console. Why? Because,

Serious question.  Uncharted and God of War are both possibly ending and neither one are 10 million + sellers.  Which leaves it up to gran turismo.

Why does it have to sell 10M? I think you're setting the bar too high. Uncharted and GOW are both big franchises that push a lot of systems, and GT is a mega-franchise that pushes a hell of a lot of systems. That and big third parties, the potential of new IPs, and smaller franchises is more than enough.

Neither Uncharted nor GOW will end with this generation, I don't even think that's worth debating.

lool yea i noticed now but i just couldnt resiste pointing that out :D

lol I cant imagine you behind your keyboard doing what your avatar picture is doing over there lmao Anyways I'll say thanks :)

lmao hahaha!! but to answer your question lol

uncharted - a now 5-6 million seller will probably push a lot of consoles, i dont think sony is anywear near done with uncharted games, every uncharted game has its own story, nothing is connected to the other so they arent forced to end the games just because they reached a certain number, they can keep making new ones each with their own adventure

God Of War - a 4-5 million seller that will probably reach 6 million in sales with GoW A, the story of the franchise is heavely related around Kratos, with the ending of GoW3, its hard to make a GoW 4 and its probably why GoW A is a prequal. i dont see room to make another GoW game unless its continuing the story of GoW A. all in all i dont think they are making another GoW game for PS4

Gran Turismo - a 10+ million seller, even though it wont move huge amounts of systems in USA, i mean its still a good seller but no were near the amount of sales it gets in europe. it will still move a huge amount of systems and really push the PS4, especially if they release 2 GT games on the console

LittleBigplanet 3-5 million seller - a game that will most likely sell around that range, it wont move huge units so fast and on its release, but it will make the PS4 be considered by a different demographic of consumers so it will pull in consumers that arent drawn in by games like halo, gears and killzone

killzone - a 2-3 million even though this isnt a huge seller, its still a high quality game, and a very good FPS for people who would want them. i dont think this will be the main reason people will buy a PS4 but it will be one of the reasons along side GT and uncharted. not everybody will want it. but for people who would want an alternative to Halo (other than CoD) killzone could be the perfect choice

The Last Of Us - a game that is highly anticipated for PS3 next year with A LOT of potential, this game can really become huge, yes im takling about a  4-5 million seller, specially if it is as good as people are hoping it to be then it can do those numbers easily. if that happens sony has another mega franchise on its hands and it can move quite alot of consoles of they bring the last of us 2 on PS4

new IP guerrilla games, sony santa monica, quantic dream, media molecule are all VERY talneted developers with potential to make a new IP that will sell bucket loads. also new IPs are very important in the first couple of years of a consoles life cycle and with those developers all confirmed  making new IPs they all have a chance of making an IP that would explode in sales(expect QD but its more than likley they will make a new one)

i know my post is long and sorry for that but thats exactly my point, sony doesnt relly on one or two games to sell their systems, they never did. and its why they sell a hell of a lot of systems. add all these games and factors and you got a lot of reasons to buy a PS4, not just one or two.

Best comment I've ever seen you make XD

It really surprises me that Sony decided to keep games like Last of Us, Beyond, and even God of War Ascension on the PS3 this late in the gen.  Same thing with Halo 4 and 360.  If they would have kept these games for the neXbox and PS4 assuming that they're coming soon then they could have pushed alot of units out of the gate.

Gran Turismo is Sony's one large mass-appeal franchise. It doesn't have the draw of Halo, and is nowhere near the level of Mario Kart and New Super Mario Bros. So no, Sony doesn't have 1st party software that is at the level of its competitors. In an increasingly multiplatform world this will be a challenge difficult to overcome.

Doesn't have the draw of Halo? GT5 just hit the 9m shipped mark and GT Prologue is around the 5m. What are you talking about?

And Halo 3 12m, Halo 4 likely 4m already, Halor reach is at what 10m? Combat Evolved 2-3m? Halo Wars is even a multi million seller if I'm correct.  Then Odst with 5m+.  i'm not looking at the numbers so don't quote me on any of this but yes Halo has been bigger than GT this gen and at this rate will catch up to GT in franchise sells.  Not taking anything away fromGT, just saying.

He said "the draw of Halo". I took it as mass appeal. Gran Turismo, in fact, has mass appeal, and outside of the US, has it more than Halo. What the finally tally of GT5 vs Halo 3 will be is anyone's guess, but if we're talking MS vs Sony for franchises with that type of "draw", it's a tie. Also not sure why he brought up Mario Kart, as it's neither Nintendo's best selling franchise nor the same type of game as GT.

To the topic, Gran Turismo will sell the most consoles, but Uncharted, Fifa, Final Fantasy, and God of War can all push some units during their respective sell periods. However, if there's one thing to know about the PlayStation brand, it has never has, nor needed, huge system sellers. The entire library has always been the brand's carrying point. I don't imagine PS4 being any different.

That is false. 3rd parties have carried the PS1 and PS2 with big blockbuster releases. PS3, nor PS4 will have that luxury.

OT - Gran Turismo. But I doubt Sony is gonna do that. They let PD take their sweet time.
