Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii U Virtual Console Coming in the Future

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32474

Until then, the GamePad is no use for Virtual Console titles.

The Wii U will be receiving its own Virtual Console service in the future, Nintendo's Satoru Iwata confirmed. Until its arrival, however, players cannot expect to be playing Wii and Wii Virtual Console titles on the Wii U GamePad.

As confirmed by our Japan correspondents, a post on NeoGAF's gaming forums quoted Iwata to say "We understand that there are people who were looking to playing Wii games, Virtual Console games, and so forth on the GamePad, but unfortunately we cannot accommodate those users' expectations."

As it stands, Wii Virtual Console titles are only available to play on the Wii U by putting the system into Wii Mode. From there, only accepted Wii controllers are allowed for use.

I kind of expected this. But also, I didn't?

Sounds good; hope they have a good selection of GC titles!

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I really hope that when the Wii U Virtual Console comes out, you can transfer the rights to those games from 'Wii' status to 'Wii U' status, enabling control with the Wii U Pro controller or GamePad and letting you play them on the Pad itself.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

I suspect it can't because the Wii Virtual Console is actually an emulator which naturally never had any Wii U functionality in mind when it was designed. It also seems that all Wii functions are sandboxed away from the higher Wii U level systems to prevent older Wii exploits. It's also probably a lot easier to enable Wii features in their own software environment rather than try to fully integrate it directly into the Wii U software environment.

That is pretty much my train of thought.  I would also like to play my VC games on the 3DS and not be offered to buy the same VC game that I already purchased on Wii.

What will happen first? Ninty providing a good chunk of classic goodies on GamePad, or it will be eventually hacked and I can get them through 3rd party emulation anyway? VC is a big factor for me.

Likely Nintendo.  Unliek the Wii and DS, Nintendo seems to have really ramped up their security.  The 3DS has yet to be hacked and it's been out over a year and half.   Wii functionality is sandboxed anyway so that adds a whole new level of security on top of it all.

I already suspected that a lot of the implementations on the Wii U are only temporary solutions since they seem not well thought out. I guess Nintendo wanted to keep their word on bc and hacked something together that sucks but at least works. I mean they have their hands full right now, handing out all those Animal Crossing games, maybe they should employ those 10k people that Sony is about to "let go".

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

They did it with GC mode on Wii, so this was expected. But porting Wii emulators to Wii U is not a big deal, I can imagine if exisitng Wii homebrew scene would have full access to Wii U OS they could do it in blink of an eye.

My Wii is practically a emu-machine right now, shared between legally obtained VC games and not so legal emualtion (I do play games I own though... mostly :D ). Damn Ninty, I takes ages before every next VC update and now it's practically dead.

I did notice that they made you do a Wii update when visiting the Wii Shop Channel a few days ago. I suppose this update is just another "counter" against the homebrewers/hacked systems?  I don't see any info about the recent update on their update history page.
