I didn't say they are exactly the same or even that they have the same themes. But I assure you that Halo has depth. You may like digging into Star Wars lore and reading into its themes more, but Halo is more than a military shooter in space.
Now, what I said was that they both have rich back stories and detailed universes. Yes Mass Effect does too and I love Mass Effect just as much as I love Halo and Star Wars. But since you seem to have so little regard for the Halo universe I'll go ahead and check off the things it has in common with Star Wars. Most of this will apply to Mass Effect too.
1. Detailed timelines that go tens or thousands or millions of years in their past
2. Intergalactic wars on huge scales
3. Swords composed of white hot energy
4. Energy shooting weapons
5. Machines that act like people
6. Beautiful artwork/special effects/graphics
7. Franchises that span books, games, boardgames, animation, comics, films, toys, etc.
8. Space (I love stuff that takes place in space)
9. Man/Alien made installation/ships the size of planets
10. Cool looking and interesting aliens with just as much history and back story as humans
I really don't care if you think this list is B.S. or if you think Halo isn't as good. What I said still stands. Halo and Star Wars are, to me, big expansive and interesting sci-fi universes that I enjoy very much. I can't get enough Halo or Star Wars. The new Halo Trilogy is off to a spectacular start and I can't wait for the next just like I can't wait for Disney's Star Wars Episode VII. I do feel the same way about Mass Effect, I'm one of the fan that didn't hate the ending of 3 so I'd love a new one.
