Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii U needs an update to play Wii disc games

Ever heard of wifi?  The Wii does software updates with no ethernet cable plugged into it.  My XBox 360 is also wifi, so no cable plugged in there either.  I'm not understanding where this is an issue.

I have it on good and extensive authority that wi-fi isn't good enough to upload a floppy disk, let alone game online or do anything really. I also have it on good and extensive authority that serious gamers use ethernet, not wi-fi, and that most 360 owners use their ethernet connection instead of their wi-fi. Thanks for telling us that you're not a Serious Gamer, though.

Lol, don't be silly. Every serious gamer uses dial-up modems, otherwise it just ain't hardcore.

This is nothing. Just wait 'til they announce that you need an update to use a wireless connection.

@everyone saying anti-piracy: Why do you say that? I don't see the connection.

just a guess but wii was exploitable through some wii games (ex. twilight hack) so keeping the wii part of the wii u separate could likely prevent the use of those hacks on the wii u. Having to download it afterwards could also free up space for people who don't want to use their wii u as a wii and also allow nintendo more time to perfect it after production has started.

Either way, not a big deal

@the first part: Things like the twilight hack have long since been patched on Wii. Exploits aren't passed down to new devices like that.

The second part doesn't make much sense. Emulators aren't at all large in size, they wouldn't be saving much. If it's hardware backwards compatibility, then it's even less space.

I think it's the last one. They probably wanted to start production as early as possible, it's the main reason you see day one patches in general.

I'm bi-serious, I use both ...at the same time.

Tell that to people without internet, without pretending everyone is online nowdays,

If you have the money to buy a Wii U, then you must have some form of internet connection, even if it is really bad.

Dear people without internet, go to your friend's house.

Actually, to my surprise, kyliedog has something of a point. Not the "without internet" part. That's just stupid.

No, I mean lots of people either have internet connections that are not suitable for downloading updates like this (dial-up, satellite, etc.), or they have no interest in doing so. I recently read a statistic that several million (30, I think? Or maybe 30%?) 360s had never been connected to the internet. I believe this is part of why disc games contain OS updates.

I said without pretending.  A baseless statement is pretending.

Why pretend if it's pretty much a given that any person around the world who buys a Wii U will have an internet connection? Video games are an expensive hobby, and like I said if you have the money to buy a next gen system you must have an internet connection, imo it's common sense.
