"The first topic I want to address is the concern that the Wii did not have as much core content as the Cube or the N64. Is this a valid concern, and what are the arguments for or against this?

What kind of content would a person saying that be asking for, and how does that compare with the cube or N64?"

I would say that I agree and disagree. At the time, the Gamecube/N64 were arguably the most powerful consoles of their day. There were definitely software droughts for both consoles and, despite being quite powerful, they both often got the short end of the stick when it came to multi-plats. Still, for my dollar, there are more timeless classics that I would play today when compared to their competition at the time.

Now, the Wii was a different beast altogether. It wasn't trying to be state of the art as far as horsepower was concerned. It had the ability to play traditional games but, for the most part, it was hardware designed for a different experience. It was designed to take advantage of the developer's creativity. Unfortunately, many developer's idea of "creative" was taking a move designed for a button and assigning it to a "waggle" and calling it a day. That wouldn't work (most of the time).

I'll make this short. The Wii didn't get much third party support because developers just didn't know how or often didn't try to take advantage of the Wii's strengths. There were some big budget attempts but their failure only strengthened animosity towards the Wii. Still, when the Wii was utilized properly, it had what some would consider the best game in every genre save the TPS/FPS (though Metroid Prime held that place in my heart for a loooong time. Wii will have just as many timeless games as the competition.

In my opinion.

I like Nintendo's take on less violent games but there is severe lack of games in the shooter sub genre. Shooters both first and third person have been the best selling and revered games on other consoles in the last 5-6 years. I'd love a Mario paintball/laserquest fps.

Defence? WTF?

It was the Nintendo anti troll thread but got mod edited to defence (Kantor's post).  I believe this thread was a response to

The problem for developing for Wii is/was that developers didn't have enough incentive to create something that couldn't be easily multi-platform. Developers are now in the business of making as much money as possible, because we live in a competitive, capitalist world. So, in a business perspective, it makes sense to develop for PC/Xbox360/PS3, because it maximizes profit for minimal effort.

That to me really explains the lack of 3rd party "core games" on the Wii, but if we're being honest here, "core games" somehow became synonymous with "HD shooter", which Wii obviously lacked. I would argue that Nintendo's AAA games are still very much core games, because they appeal to an audience of dedicated gamers. And when it comes to platforming, Mario is still the king.

In your opinion, what were some of the big budget attempts that failed on the Wii?

Haven't you destroyed enough lives?  Remember Zero129?  Remember Billy Wilcox (that kid you killed)?  Don't turn your fury on me.  I will say that there were NO big budget attempts on the Wii just to avoid this confrontation.

I would say MH3 was a semi big budget attempt and it succeeded.  I can't think of any big budget 3rd party titles on Wii that failed though.

you're never really going to convince a person who hates a system otherwise, there are always going to be hordes of people claiming that they own 1000 xbox360s all of which RRoD'd or Ps3s with Ylod from research you can tell that every 3ds owner ever cries to sleep that they don't have a 2nd analogue stick and every time they put the system down the 2 screens fill with yellow tint and scratches.

The one I love is when the same people you see claiming they'd love the 3ds to have more analogue sticks are the same people who'll happily post a picture of a n64 controller and laugh at how you'd need 3 hands to use it all at once... but somehow they'd grow a 3rd hand to operate the touch screen and 2 sticks.

But yeah bit ranty there, sorry HappyD I like the idea that you could argue with logic to people and they would then accept those points and go and try out the Wiiu for themselves but this just isn't the case. Nintendo get cried at for not having hardcore games like bayonetta, they then pull bayonetta 2 outta the bin and fund it's creation and you get people jumping out windows because Nintendo have no right to take their hard core games. Some people just dislike companies for 1 reason or another, you wont change their mind with 1 argument Nintendo/Sony and Microsoft have been spending millions and millions on advertising to try and do this for the past 10 years it hasn't helped :D
