Forums - Gaming Discussion - Rumor: Samsung looking to enter gaming industry, hiring game developers?

Rumor has it that Samsung is looking to jump into the gaming industry. Japanese tech site SGAME is reporting that Samsung sent out a notice to all affiliate companies notifying them that they’re looking into “the game industry ‘frontier’”, and that Samsung has begun hiring video game developers for first party games.

Samsung is said to be looking to hire game designers and game directors.

Samsung has denied that they are going to make their own game hardware, but we know that if it’s really in the early stages of development there would be no point in revealing it right now.

This doesn’t necessarily mean Samsung will be releasing a console anytime soon. Perhaps the Korean electronics maker wants to make some first party games and will include some sort of gaming functionality in their Smart TV’s. That would be my best guess, first party Samsung games on Samsung smart TV’s.

Don’t expect to hear anymore about this for a while as it sounds like Samsung is just now beginning to look into the game industry. I also wouldn’t be surprised if we hear more rumors about Samsung entering the gaming industry around E3 2013.

Sh*t just got real!

With all the talk of Google/Apple/Valve possibly getting involved most people overlooked Samsung.

Shit could get very interesting.

Probably just SW, from the information in this article.

I hope. There would be too many players.

This is definitely the most likely situation, in my opinion.

Korean games >>>>>>> Japanese games! (Testing fanboy shit)..

This is the beginning of what I've been posting about all year. Android and iOS will hit the core gaming market hard in 2013. It will be with TV connected devices like the googTV and iTV products and will include casual mobile experiences as well as core console experiences.

Digital only, tons'of bluetooth controller support, same exact games on phone, tablet, tv connected boxes, etc.

MS will clearly fit this same bill with their win8/live/web store/xbox full interchangeability.
Nintendo will fit its niche and its wiiu should be perfectly ok with its first party games and hopefully they thought ahead when it comes to smart / web services and such.
Sony should be able to compete if they don't follow their Vita model. They really need to utilize Android in the long run to provide the same level of smart services as they don't have the first party to singularly drive sales like Nintendo does.

We won't see typical games consoles next gen. They will be smart web devices that have core gaming applications along with a ton of other functionality.

I'll rampantly speculate that it's for future tablets/smartphones and will be looked to their hardware...at least until they get hacked to run on everything.

Given the nature of the industry (and that most business conventional wisdom sees all consoles and not just handhelds as living on borrowed time), i would doubt Samsung would build a console. Either stuff to help promote their phones or their Smart TV's, like the OP said.

Although perhaps they want to emulate Microsoft's strategy with the Xbox, an effort to further dominate the living room beyond their current home electronics.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Hahahahahaha, I'd love to see them try.
